Bicycle Tour of Algeria

A friend and I are planning a 90 day bike tour of Algeria. We are of Canadian and US citizenship. We will be on the road for about 6 months before we reach Algeria. Our desire is to ferry to Algers from France or Spain, and begin the journey. Is is possible to arrange a visa from either of these two countries considering they are not our countries of origin? Can you recommend a travel agent in Southern France or Spain that could help us with letters of invitation? Any advice on the details of visa arrangement would be greatly appreciated. Does anyone know of a bicycling club (or related) in Algeria? Thanks. Paul and Zoe

You can only get visas from Algerian consulates in the country of your passport, not country of birth or citizenship. This is especially so for those holding more than 1 passport. If using a US passport, get it from US.

As for letter of invitations, much cheaper to get it from Algerian agency than one an agent in southern france. Basically, letter of invitations can only be issued by Algerian tour operators, not foreign travel agencies.

For biking, you can try www.atakor-bikers.com. I saw their add in an Algiers guidebook.

Thanks very much for the info. It seems to go along with what I have read. Do you know how far in advance one can obtain a visa? We will not enter Algeria for at least 5 months after starting the trip. I called the Embassy, and they were of no help. Thanks again. Paul

Sorry no idea. The best to inform you is the embassy, even if they were of no help, you have to figure a way to get the info. You see in Algerian culture, what is written is different from what is said which is different from what is done. So the embassy is the one that is doing the visa, so you must get the info from them. The other option is asking an agency that does visa. Without getting them to actually do your visa, just state your situation and that if you were to use their services, would it be possible to get the visa so far in advance.
