Things not to miss for a trip of a lifetime

This is our first trip and we don't want to miss a thing.....what are the highlights, must sees, must dos, must eats, must shops.

Would appreciate any advice. We are vegetarian and are going to be in Waikiki.

You can park on Ala Wai Blvd 24 hours except for two days a week it is closed from 8:30 - noon for street cleaning. Parking spaces will be hard to find after 5pm and you are not likely to find one near your hotel, but you can try it & if it is difficult you can always change plans & park at your hotel.

"You can park on Ala Wai Blvd 24 hours except for two days a week it is closed from 8:30 - noon for street cleaning." Monday & Friday I think, but look at the signs.

Honolulu police are quick to tow cars.

Hey Dusty,

Will definitely double check those signs... I am quite surprised that it is still so busy at this time a yr. But I guess it is logical since it's a wonderful vacation spot. We are leaving tomorrow morning and I just got done reading your tips/guide... now to map out everything and plan a schedule... This is almost too much work for a vacation... =) thanks a bunch!

There are thousands of local residents that live in Waikiki. They are the ones that take up the parking spaces at night. Many of the condos/apartments they live in don't have parking or only have one parking stall for families with 2 or more cars.

Hey Dusty,

Is the Go Oahu card worth the money? We will only be there for 6 days in May. Should we just try to use coupons?

Us Hawaii residents get Kamaaina (Hawaii resident) rates for many attractions. I also use the Entertainment Book & other coupons. So I have never had the need for the Go Oahu Card.

I think you'll get better info about Go Oahu Card from those who have used it.

On the Oahu forum, use the search function: Go Oahu Card

There are a lot of threads.

If you need more info than that, then start a new topic on the Oahu forum.

You can read these entire brochures including ads & coupons:

'This Week on Oahu' (also other islands):

http://www.thisweek.com/allislands/maps.html

Scroll to the bottom & click on the cover for Oahu

'Oahu Gold' (also other islands):

http://www.spotlighthawaii.com/

Scroll to the bottom & click on the cover for Oahu

'101 Things To Do On Oahu' (also other islands)

http://www.101thingstodo.com/

You can also print 3 free coupons from Entertainment Book. You have to use the coupons within 14 days of printing.

You can order hard copy brochures for all islands.

You can now download the entire brochures for most of the islands.

The following have both hard copy & online brochures:

http://www.bigisland.org/

Click on: View E-book

http://www.kauaidiscovery.com/travelplanner/

These two have hard copy brochures that you can order:

http://www.visitlanai.net/

http://www.molokai-hawaii.com/

You can read these entire magazines including ads & coupons.

'Oahu Gold' (also Maui, Kauai, Big Island)

We are going to Oahu Saturday. Is this driving tour up to date to 2009 with constructions, etc.

The driving tours are up to date. But they don't include any construction areas.

Tip on the driving tours:

Start around 8am. It is just after rush hour & before most tourists & other traffic is out & about. A lot less traffic.
