**Disclaimer: My trip report doesn't include a lot of BEACH TIME! :-( We came (3/7-3/13) when Oahu and other islands were seeing the craziest weather in a long time! Tornados, hail, flooding... seriously, a dreary mess. The sun only came out to play for short periods of time and it was cold! Sadly, I couldn't get to hike Diamondhead due to the rain closure. Next time, I guess! This is why my report is so food centric.
3/7 Wed: Got in around 2 p.m., got groceries at Safeway and made our way to our condo rental at Waikiki Banyan. After a brief break, we wanted to eat somewhere close and decided on Tiki’s, which was only a few blocks away. We walked along the beach but it was a pretty uneventful night since we were tired from the flight.
-We had 11 a.m. reservations for the USS Arizona tour. We showed up at 10 a.m. and spent the hour touring the grounds before taking the boat across the way.
-Stopped off and took pics in front of Kamehameha Statue and walked the ground of Iolani Palace.
-Drove up to Punchbowl Cemetery: didn’t get to roam around because it was raining.
-happy hour at the YardHouse Restaurant (we had to check out all the Hawaiian brews)
3/9 Fri: it was absolutely dreary so we tried to do indoor things this day.
-lunch at Yama’s Fish Market
-shaved ice from Waiola Shave Ice
-dropped my boyf's parents off at the Bishop museum and we went to Tamura’s Fine Wine & Liquors to check out what different beers they had for sale.
-Got ice cream at Bubbie’s Ice Cream
-After we picked up the parental unit, we checked out Chinatown for an hour or so.
-Had dinner at Marukame Udon: one of the best meals of the trip.
-KCC farmers market in the morning
-Bought some malasadas from Leonard’s on the way back to the condo (we had to check out at 11 a.m.)
-since we were taking the windward (east coast) up to the North Shore, we decided to stop off at the Whole Foods to pick up some coffee to bring home.
-Stopped off at Kona Brewpub for a light snack and drinks.
-stopped off at various points along the windward coast to take pics. It is absolutely gorgeous!
-Since we were driving right by it, we stopped off at Hoomaluhia Botanical Gardens and spent a few hours there. It is a beautiful park and it's FREE! Amazing.
-Got shaved ice from Aoki’s! Delicious!
-also stopped by the Haleiwa Farmer's Market
-Walked along the beach where the turtles hang out at Laniakea Beach. There weren’t actually any turtles at the rocky area where the tourists were hanging at, but a man who lived on the beach told us there several turtles that were parked right in front of his home. He proceeded to escort us for ½ mile and sure enough, we saw 3 turtles!
-I think we tried to get in some beach time, but once again, it was FREEZING.
-Spent the morning at Waimea Valley: the swimming area was closed because of bacteria concerns (due to all the rain)
-Visited the shrimp truck “Blue Water Shrimp and Seafood” – good, but Macky’s is better.
-Saw the HA Breath of Life show at PCC: I really enjoyed this show. It's a bit pricey, but I thought it was worth it. We opted NOT to do the whole day at PCC.
3/13 Tues (last day!):
-since the sun was kind of peeking out in the morning, my boyf and I made a mad dash to the beach to try to get some snorkeling in (Kuilima Cove on Turtle Bay). The water was FREEZING but I braved it for a good 30minutes. I did see around 10 different species of fish out there. I think there were only two other brave souls trying to snorkel that morning and we were all shivering when we got out.
-stopped in at Ted’s Bakery but we didn’t really eat anything.
-more shaved ice at Aoki’s (don't judge, that stuff is awesome!)
-since we were taking the interior road back to Honolulu, we stopped off at Macky’s shrimp truck for a snack. Spicy shrimp was delicious!
-Made a quick stop at the Dole plantation. My boyf’s parents proceeded to buy two pineapples to bring home for some friends. Seriously, they were more expensive here than at the grocery store. Not sure why they bought the fruit here, but they did.
-Since our flight didn’t leave until 8;30 p.m., we stopped back off at Waikiki Beach (of course the last day we were actually there it was the first day that was actually clear!) for a last walk on the beach.
-Since Nico's Pier 38 is near the airport, we ate dinner there, again, and made our way to the airport.
Overall, I had a great time on the trip! Although the conditions weren't ideal, we still had fun and ate really well. That's all I can ask for, really.
