Best Buys as Aussie in Hawai

Wondering what best buys as a Aussie travelling to Hawai. I have heard cosmetics, perfume is signifigantly cheaper, good brand jeans etc

Is this correct, how much should l expect to pay and where would be best to buy. ??

Shopping is paradise in the US ... especially with our dollar the way it is.

First thing you do is go to a Macy's store information desk with your passport, and you'll get a 10% discount card which lasts a month at any of their stores.

They have a few stores over the islands.

Have a look at their website for some prices before you go.

ABC stores carry souvenirs, as well as medicinal and food items. They're on every corner.

Ala Moana Shopping Center is the biggest mall on the islands ... and worth a visit. They have a couple of department stores and lots of smaller ones, as well as a huge food court on the ground floor.

Make up -- well it's the bargain of the whole trip. Make up and perfume is an Aussie favourite for purchases. Places like Macy's sell Estee Lauder, Mac and other top notch brands ... while Longs Drugs sell Revlon, Cover Girl etc.

www.cvs.com is the website for Longs Drugs in Hawaii (CVS took them over). There is a Longs Drugs store at Ala Moana ... Check the website for prices before you go. You'll be pleasantly surprised.

There's also a factory outlet at Waikele. They have a website too ...

www.premiumoutlets.com Click on locations for the one in Hawaii and there'll be a list of stores. It's not as big as some on the mainland, but it has a few stores you may be interested in.

Ross' is a bargain place too ... sort of like a K-Mart ... but amazing prices and lots of clothes.

Sports Authority has great sporting goods, if you're into that.

And then there's the Ward Center:

There is a Sports Authority and Ross' store behind the Ward Center.

You can get The Bus from Waikiki to Ward Center and work your way back.

While we're here, a couple of restaurants popular with Aussies ... the Cheesecake Factory -- not only "to die for cheesecakes" but their menu is amazing... and their serves are huge. You may have to have a cheesecake "to go" to take back to your room for supper. Go for early or late lunch, or early dinner .. or the queues will be quite long. In the centre of Waikiki.

Red Lobster -- a nice seafood place between the Hilton and Ala Moana.

Delicious seafood .. and yummy cheesy rolls.

The Old Spaghetti Factory ... a cheap eatery ... at the far end of the Ward Center shops.

Teddy's Burgers .. . home made burgers.

Shorebirds and Dukes on Waikiki Beach are also popular.

Hope I haven't confused you.

Eaglemaniac has given some good tips and suggestions.

Cosmetics is definitely cheaper...Walmart, Long Drugs stores etc have cheap cosmetics - it's like heaven there!! It of course depends on the brands you like - they have Covergirl, Revlon etc.

You're gonna love Hawaii!! Shopping and dining in Oahu is awesome. ;-)

I love Macy's, Waikele outlets, Ala Moana, ABC stores and Cheesecake factory....I cannot wait to return!

Have fun shopping!!

You are going to have an absolute ball.

Fantastic suggestions from above.

Another couple of items that we normally purchase when we head over there:

* Athletic shoes - at least half the Aussie price, if not cheaper. Check out Foot Locker, Sports Authority, even Macy's, etc. I have picked up 2 pair of ladies Nike runners for $100 at Lady Foot Locker at Ala Moana. They may be the previous season style, ie they maybe season 7, when there's now been season 8 released, but generally it's only a cosmetic change to the shoe.

* Surf clothing - all your brand names, ie, Billabong, Rip Curl, Quiksilver, etc - again heaps cheaper. You're probably looking at a t-shirt being about $20, compared to $40+ at home. This applies to all their range, from thongs (slippas!) to clothing, to even their luggage. Can't tell you about wetsuits, boards, etc, didn't take any notice.

* Golf Gear - if you have anyone who's mad about golf - it's their Nirvana - well, at least it's my husband's Nirvana! Last trip he brought home a new set of Nike clubs for some incredible price (compared to home). The Nike dri-fit clothing - cheap, & all other associated golfing accessories, etc, apparel for golfers much cheaper. I think we came home with about a dozen boxes of golf balls - a dozen in each box - (man those little suckers sure can pack some weight). Not sure if the Quarantine guy thought we might have been trying to smuggle in eggs or something!

* Handbags & shoes - take me to my happy place!!!!

* Kitchenaid Accessories - if you have a Kitchenaid mixer or food processor, you know how expensive accessories/attachments can be. Macy's generally have a good supply of accessories/attachments. Also check out Williams-Sonoma at Ala Moana, as well as Executive Chef at the Ward Center Shops.

Also, if you have access to the daily newspaper The Star Advertiser, Macy's may be having a special one day sale, or just a morning or afternoon sale with some really good savings to be had. Just have to check the paper each morning to see what's doing.

We head off in 4 weeks, (more importantly - only 15 more working days!!!) & already the shopping list is very LONG! Thank god for HA & their very generous baggage allowance.

Oops, almost forgot - if you look up on the right hand side of the page - there is a big heading - "Top Questions About Oahu" - look a bit down the topics & there is a heading "Shopping for Aussies" - it has some useful information in it to have a read of as well.

Enjoy your trip & happy shopping & hope you find plenty of bargains, which we're sure you will.

Cheers, Paula.
