cheap unique place to stay in oahu

My husband and I will be spending several day in April on Oahu after a week long cruise. We are looking for a place to stay but can only find large hotels. We prefer off the beaten path places and love to "find our own adventures". I'd love to stay in a hut on the beach! (but I'm guessing those are only in the movies :) ) We don't need anything fancy at all, and actually prefer rustic - we are looking to spend around $100 a night. Help :) Thanks!

I have friends that have stayed at the Aqua Bamboo. There are other Aqua properties as while.

Given your desire to stay in a hut on the beach you need to rent a YURT!

I was really happy with my stay in an inexpensive Punaluu condo, on the windward side of Oahu between Kanaohe and the North Shore. . Very quiet area, off the regular tourist track, but lots of places to explore. Wonderful sunrise views over the ocean and a calm reef-protected area for swimming right in front. Here are two examples where I can vouch for the units and the owners:

For $100 a night I doubt you will find unique ... you might find what your looking for in Tulum, Mx for that price, But my guess is not in Hawaii..

a $100 a night is a budget hotel in Waikiki off the beach and in an alley.. just sayin... We happen to be staying in one :)

I guess the EWA Waikiki Hotel could be called unique if you wanted too.. I think we're paying close to $100 a night..

I'm just thinking Unique and Cheap don't go together in Hawaii..IMO

You've gotten some good suggestions here. Here are a few more:

For an inexpensive stay in a small, friendly hotel in Waikiki that evokes a bit of old-style tourism, try the Breakers:

For an out-of the way adventure that can involve staying in a lodge room, cabin or tent right on the beach, try this:

It's an Episcopal Retreat Center that is also available for individuals to rent, and is pretty much at the "end of the road" in terms of populated areas on the island. They are often booked with groups on weekends but are usually available during the week. Our family stayed there once during Christmas week and we practically had the whole place to ourselves!

Check out Hotel Renew....unique, small, minutes from the beach. Not sure about the nightly rate...check it out.

Check-out the Royal Grove Hotel in Waikiki...

Like taking a step back into the 50s.

Inexpensive, friendly, totally different vibe, nicely funky.

Centrally located, close to beach, great eats of all types and prices nearby.

Not many places left like it anymore.

A favorite among many on this board.

You never know, Elvis may be in the next room.

I would normally recommend Kailua, but you'd be hard pressed to find something at $100 a night. Check out vrbo
