Looking for place to stay

Hi - we are planning a trip to Molokai sometime this winter/spring and wanted to know what places may be good to stay. We'd be looking for a condo/rental house that is on the beach. We like walking up & down the beach, sitting on the patio/veranda/lanai in the morning and evening and having a full kitchen.

We've never been to Molokai and want to be able to get a good idea of what the island is all about. We've been to the other big 4 and like Maui & Hawaii Big Island the best thus far.

Thanks for any words of wisdom!

Happy New Year.

Hi, your best bet might be one of the condos on the West end if you're looking for beaches to walk up and down on. And beautiful sunsets. Only problem is that in the winter and early spring you won't be able to actually swim there, it's too dangerous. Although further down is Dixie Maru beach which has good snorkeling all year and is a very nice protected cove. But no condos right there (some beautiful homes for rent however). I've never really stayed on the west end, so can't say for sure. Check vrbo website, that's the best way to go.

Also, you could stay on the east end. Wavecrest has some very nice condos I'm told, but there is no beach to walk along right there. But about 3 miles past there, beginning around mm16 ... around Pukoo and further out, there are some really nice beach cottages and homes for rent ... and also you can walk along the beach in that area. And you can swim and snorkel. It's beautiful there, and it's so nice to look across the channel to Maui! The only problem might be that you are quite a ways from "town". Although for us, we don't mind (we will be staying in this area ourselves in March). But it depends on what you want to do. And there also can be more rain on the east end (west end is the dryer side).

Molokai shores in Kaunakakai has some really nice condos (look again at VRBO website once again to weed them out). Only bummer is once again there's no 'walking along the beach' right there. It's not swimmable either. We did stay there on our first visit, and enjoyed the convenience. It's nice and handy as you would be central to all the main things to do on the island, and close to shopping and the Saturday Farmer's Market. Plus you would be very near Hotel Molokai which has good entertainment and food (and my fav ... Aloha Fridays with the kapuna).

I'm certainly not an expert, but felt bad that you haven't gotten any replies yet. I'm sure others will chime in with better advice eventually. The Molokai 'board' is a little slower than others ... which is very much indicitive of the island itself! It's one of the reasons we love it ... and hope you also find it's special charms on your first visit :) Aloha!

Aloha needbeach time,

Go the visitmolokai.com and you will see links to the local realtors, they have lots of condos and one of them has beach houses for rent. It's also a nice website to get info on Molokai.

Have a great trip and enjoy your stay on beautiful Molokai!
