Flights from Honolulu to Molokai

We are visiting Molokai in Feb. and am looking for flights. How much time should you allow between the flight from Hawaiian Air and another flight? Does anyone have advice on flights and also the caravan flight by Mokolule? small plane seats only 9. Would love advice. Thanks!!!

WE generally use Island Air for our flight from HNL to MKK. If we fly in on Hawaiian air I like to have at least 1 1/2 - 2 hours between when we arrive in HNL and need to leave for Molokai. If you don't have checked luggage you might be able to get by with a little less time.

Be sure you have transportation arranged in Molokai. Taxis are difficult to get especially at night. If you rent a car there are a couple of car rental places right at the airport. If you arrive after sunset get GOOD directions to your destination. Each year we run into someone who is lost on the West End looking for their condo rental. Traffic lights are non-existent in the country.

Alamo is it these days, the other companies pulled out.

Give yourself at least an hour from Hawaiian to either Mokulele or Island Air, they fly out of a different terminal.....(communter) in fact, ask when you land in Hnl how you get there without rechecking through security, I am pretty sure they can escort you over but it has been awhile since I went.

The Caravans are great, single engine turboprop, low and slow so you can take in the sights. They also ( I think) allow more luggage than Island Air does weight wise.

My understanding on going from the main terminal to the commuter terminal in Honolulu is that you need to leave the secure area and go back through the security in the commuter terminal. It is generally easiest to use the Wiki Wiki buses.

Also, I would check on the amount of baggage you can take on the smaller planes vs the larger Island Air planes (36 seat prop plane). Both have limits that can be found on their websites.

Doesn't Hawaiian Air also fly from Honolulu to Molokai?

I checked and you can book through them but they use Island Air and it's almost double the price of Island Air by themselves. Mokulele, I have found has been the best price and the widest variety of flight times.

Aloha,

Good avice from the other posters. One to one and a half hours between flights at least. We have had mailand flights arrive late and have had to run with our luggage, take the wiki wiki and then run to the other terminal. The stress of worrying that you will miss your connecting flight is not a fun way to start your vacation! We used Island Air this trip for flight from HNL to MKK. We only had carry ons (we ship our other stuff) and when we arrived at the check in counter at Island Air they weighed each bag. One was 25 lbs. (had my laptop packed in it) and he said it had to go through baggage. Because I had booked our flights with Island Air back in early September we did not have to pay the $10.00 baggage fee. Be sure to check their website to see what the maximum weight is that they allow for a bag.

Have a great trip, you will love Molokai and it's peace and quiet ways!

Thanks for your advice. By what service do you ship your luggage before?

Is it a lot less? Is that why you prefer to ship things ahead? I have found Mokulele is @ $30.00 less per ticket. Going to book with them.

Aloha Loves2dive,

We spend the winter here, so ship boxes through USPO, yes it's pricey, but well worth it to us so that we don't have the hassle of waiting at baggage area or lost luggage.

We were going to use Mokulele this year but I was a bit apprehesive when I read about there being a possibility of shut down. This of course did not happen and I noticed all of their flights leaving on time from HNL. We used to fly Pacific Wings for the last few trips but their prices went through the roof. Love flying those little nine seaters though, such lovely sights of Molokai as you approach the island! Enjoy your trip!
