We just got back from our 30th anniversary trip to Maui from May 18-25, 2006.
It truely is the most beautiful place on earth that we've ever been to!
We arrived after a 9 hour flight and was amazed with our clean and fancy condo at the Royal Kahana Outrigger. Be prepared for at least a one hour drive from the Kahlui airport to Lahaina due to the traffic. OUr condo was like a penthouse with a wrap around
balcony overlooking the ocean. We sat out there on the rockers every night watching the sun set and listening to the waves crash over the reefs about 50 yards out.
While its true that their beach isn't in the best shape, we walked it often and there are plenty of other sandy beaches nearby. Specacular views at least!
We went right before tourist season started so there were no crowds,(compared to what was coming according to the locals we talked to), the weather was perfect with a few days of trade winds keeping everything nice and cool.
A short walk away is the Kahana Gateway Shopping Center and we ate there at the Fish & Game Brewing Company, that had the best food we had while on Maui.
We also ate at Roys that was in the same shopping center, the atmosphere in there is ritzy and the food is more expensive but not as good as the other place. Picked up most of our souviners in the shops at that mall.
You can eat nearby at McDonalds if you want to eat cheap. We drove into Lahaina many times and went to the Royal Lahaina Luau. The food was strange but the show was pretty darn good and you can drink tropical drinks to your heart's content.
Was disappointed that they didn't have a fire dancer in that show. We got some great sunset pictures while at the Luau. Their employees are terrific.
We took the Helicopter Sky Trek/Van Tour to Hana and it was worth every penny. The van drive tours you through the rain forest, stopping for photo opportunities, then you eat lunch in Hana and fly back over the volcano, excellent tour! Ask for Kelly for the van driver, he was very informative and friendly.
The ocean was too cold for us to snorkle in, so the next best thing was the Reef Dancer in the Lahaina Harbor, a surface vessel with an underwater viewing cabin. Got some great pictures of the fish and the multi-colored coral, they have divers that bring sea urchins up to the windows to see! That was only $32 each.
Lunch at Bubba Gumps was good, so was Cool Cats across from the Banyan tree in a nice little shopping mall. We Went to Canoes for happy hour on Sunday, and they had a good jazz band but their service sucked.
The one and only bad thing about our whole trip was the cheap sardine seats on the united flights.
Our trip was very reasonable through travelocity, $1200 per person and that included the flights, condo and Luau but I think we will buy first class seats on our next trip to Maui and will certainly ask for that same condo again!
