Oahu and Maui

We are doing Oahu and Maui for our honeymoon. Our first visit to Hawaii. I am active military and trying to find the best deals and discounts.

Any advice?

Best volcano tour from Maui?

Best hidden secrets?

Best restaurants?

Best Hikes?

Best hotels?

Overal MUST things to do and see!?

Thanks in advance for any feedback!

One of the best beaches in Hawaii is yours. Bellows AFB(no base there). Fantastic location. You can also rent bungalos. Small PX. Lifeguards/ showers/ Trees almost up to the waters' edge. The best beach in Hawaii is reserved for the most deserving. General public can only use part of the beach on weekends.

How about a bit more info - like when are you coming? What is your budget? How long will you be on each island? Any particular things you want to enjoy while in Hawaii? :)

On Oahu I'd stay at the Hale Koa.

I wouldn't go to Mama's, not on a military salary.

For Maui accommodations, maybe look at Napili Kai Beach Hotel, but it really depends on your budget.

For best restaurants on Oahu, read the "Amberloo and Food" thread in the top questions section on the right of the screen.

Here is my "canned" response on Maui's best restaurants.

In West Maui, any of the TS Restaurants (Duke's, Kimo's, Leilani's or Hula Grill) solid food, good locations and Hula Pie.

Merriman's (Kapalua): one of my two favorite high end places in West Maui.

Plantation House (Kapalua): my actual favorite West Maui restaurant. A very different perspective from being down on the ocean and very good food.

Roy's (Ka’anapali): like Roy's every place, very good food and very good service.

Lahaina Grill (Lahaina): superb, fresh ingredients, well prepared.

Mala Ocean Tavern and Honu are both great, mid priced options and Betty's Beach Cafe is fun and a nice location.

For good, reasonable food look also look at The Gazebo at the Napili Shores for breakfasts, but get there early or you wait, if the line is too long walk across the beach to the Sea House at Napili Kai; Mama's Ribs & Rotisserie in Napili Plaza, also in Napili Plaza is Maui Tacos.

In Lahaina there is the Sunrise Café, Pioneer Inn, Star Noodle, Local Food and Nagasako Okazuya.

For South Maui, on the high end DUO, Ferraro, Joe's Bar & Grill, Nick's Fishmarket, Monkeypod Kitchen, Amasia, Spago and Hali'imaile General Store.

For more reasonable South Maui places to eat breakfast and lunch, look at Peggy Sue’s (Kihei), Stella Blues, Da Kitchen, Cheeseburger Island Style, Mulligan's on the Blue, Lulu's, South Shore Tiki Lounge, Joy's Place, Moose McGillycuddy's and Fred’s Mexican Cafe.

For moderate prices, look at Tommy Bahama's Coconuts Fish Cafe, Cafe O'Lei, Eskimo Candy, Cuatro and the 808 Bistro.

If you are near Kahului, Da Kitchen, Sam Sato's and for baked goods Home Maid Bakery, T. Komoda Store & Bakery and Stillwell's.

When are you coming? How many nights will you have?

I would stay at Hale Koa on Waikiki.

Also - these forums are a wealth of information for you. Start reading down through the Maui and the Oahu Forums. We can't begin to tell you the wealth of information there. Constant dialogue about things to do and restaurants.

Also - pick up a good travel guide for Maui and for Oahu - and make sure that you have a good map for each as you plan.

Also - you will need a car on Maui and should (must) reserve it in advance ... like when you get your airline tickets. You can get around Honolulu on Oahu without a car, but to get out and see the Island (and you will want to!), you'll need a car.

Been to Oahu twice.. stayed at Aston Wakiki Beach Hotel both times.. Nice location right across road from waikiki beach with nothing but the ocean in the view... hotel offers complimentary 'breakfast' (bagels, donuts, fruit, cereal, juices/coffee, ect.. for free, and if you want an omlet its $5).. nice restruant/bar attached with live music from breakfast to closing... A MUST see is Honauma Bay... been there four times -awesome snorkeling... hike diamond head.. great view.. swim with sharks on north shore - really cool... did a submarine as well - pretty cool, saw sharks/turtles/ect...
