This is pretty far to go for a picnic but....we sure found an amazing spot. It is located about halfway down the road to Hana. It is a small unmarked road that leads down to the villiage of Haiku. We used Maui Revealed, but still managed to drive by the road twice in an attempt to find it. You follow the road for about 5 miles until it ends right above the ocean. It has an AMAZING view!! there is a huge grassy spot where you could lay out a blanket etc. If the surf is really rough you may get a little spray. The view looks back at winding road and mountains, it was one of the highlights of our trip and we will go for sure when we head back to Maui in Dec.

If you don't have to be completely secluded, Kahekili Beach Park near Kahana is great. Great parking, grassy area, beach, pavilion, restrooms, grills and picnic areas, outside showers and boardwalk. But not crowded at all. At least not when we've been there. The snorkeling isn't too bad either if the wind is low (kicks up silt).

Try the black sand beach in the Wailea area. Nice snorkling under the right conditions and not crowded. Mrs. S. and I were there once by ourselves, until a man and his son came to join us. No facilities, however.

The Tedschi Winery has a lovely picnic area, and you can also go sample some wine while you are there. Beautiful grounds, not much walking required and no big crowds - enjoy! :)
