cave drawings

When we last visited the islands, I became interested in the ancient cave drawings. Does anyone know how I can find information about that? In particular, the sign/drawing for Kohola (whale).

Thanks!

Google "hawaii petroglyphs" for a great bunch of sources.

Probably the best/easiest place to view a series of them is at Waikoloa Beach Resort along the Mamalahoa Trail (which bisects the resort) or adjacent to the Anaehoomalu anchialine pond.

The "new" Kaloko-Honokohau National Historic Monument also has a petroglyph field.

proably the best resourceis the National Park Service At Volcanoes National Park.. they have a full staff of specialists who are doing research on artifacts and sites.

The Bishop Museum is another resource.

Of note here in Hawaii, visiting caves requires a permit issued from the DLNR. The reason for this is that it has been the custom in Hawaii is for cave burials since the soil is so shallow in many spots. This is a very real issue here .

seeing petroglyphs is not a problem on the surface.

Thank you for all of your help. What I'm looking for is art. I would like to find some artwork with a symbol for Kohola, if there is one.
