Best boogie boarding, body surfing beaches

Will be on the big island and Maui first 2 weeks of August. any suggestions as to where on both islands the best surf might be. 3-6 foot surf would be great. Not much bigger. Thanks, DC.

www.surfline.com

Follow the link on the left side for the "Full Surf Spot List: Hawaii" You can select from reports for different sides of different islands.

We love to boogie board.

Our favorite spots on the Big Island are Kua Bay (crowded, closed Wednesday, no lifeguards) and Hapuna (big beach, lifeguards).

Our favorite spots on Maui are D.T. Fleming, Kamaole Beaches, and Big Beach (no lifeguards).

This time of the year the waves are often flat.

Remember that any of these beaches can have big waves that can really hurt you. Please observe the water before entering. We've gone to all of these beaches except the Kamaole Beaches when the waves were too big to enter the water and we like big waves. It is just not worth a broken neck, let alone a ruined vacation. I've been at both Hapuna and D.T. Fleming when somebody has been taken from the surf on a backboard. That is our cue to head elsewhere.

oh I forgot....we view www.hawaiiweathertoday.com and their Surfing link on the left to see what beaches have waves. For us 2' and higher are good. This usually equates to a wave face of 4'. It also includes a forecast of what kind of waves to expect in the upcoming days.

In August the islands tend to get south swells; look for south facing beaches. South Maui maybe?

Hapuna is generally at its flattest that time of year, as was noted; otherwise it's known as the best for boarding.

Follow the links and also check out the map for beaches that get south swells.
