Copan/Dec 2012

Major Maya sites in Mex, Guate, Belize and even El Salvador are planning large, important cultural events in an attempt to capitalize on the 2012 hype. Want to know where you can avoid all that hoopla & hype? Where there will be no salsa band concerts, nor faux Mayan ceremonies, nor carnival atmosphere .... how about Copan? Here 2012 on Dec 21 will be ushered in a la Copaneca without any fanfare, concerts and sordid spectacles! Some may lament the lack of major intl performers helicoptering into Copan for the 21st ... on the other hand others will relish the opportunity to spend time in a buccolic, uncrowded, unspoiled major Maya site without all the fanfare and hype! A hearty well done to the Honduran Ministry of Tourism for avoiding all the shtick, promotion, crowds and carnival atmosphere that will predominate in the other major Maya sites. Dec 21 in Copan may not have been planned to come out this way .. but Copan may just experience the best 2012 celebration (or lack there of) of them all!

Was actually considering going there in early December, and was just starting to do my research. I guess if Copan isn't going the "schtick" route for 12/21/12, early Dec. is safe too. Thanks for the info!

The 2012 celebration in Copan was a huge success! There were concerts, food, cultural presentations, more music and more music. The town was filled to the brim with visitors from near and far and the vibe was relaxed, fun and enchanting.

Although 2012 was something of an internet & media inspired " non event " from the get go .... the days prior to Dec 21 enabled the Maya World to show off the best it has to offer. Honduras, El Salvador, Belize and Mexico, pulled out all the stops to receive thousands of visitors providing a boost to local economies and the tourism sector in general.

Hopefully the mid to long term effect of the 2012 celebration will burn on long after this winter ends. The Maya world has shown the world that it can host large, world class events such as this with professionalism and class.

Tourism adds a much needed boost to the struggling economies in many of the Maya world countries and visitors receive a unique cultural and historical experience that is world class.
