we want to do a tour of copan and Guatemala and wonder when is the best time of the year to travel?
Winter .... Nov - March is very nice .. temps are cooler and more pleasant ... heading into April and Easter Week it gets very hot and dry and Easter is the big vacation time for locals here. so best to avoid Easter Week entirely. Summers are very nice, warm days and cool evenings. Really any time of the year is a good time to visit Guatemala and Honduras. The avg year round temperature in Copan Ruinas for example is a downright perfect 78F .... so just about anytime of the year is good. Off seasons here are May - June and Sept - Oct .. so if you are looking to avoid other tourists, these are the best times to travel.
Is there a rainy season?
Rainy season is apprx May - November .... heaviest is May, June, July although even in the rainy season it does not rain every day and more often than not showers fall just in the late afternoon, so most days are quite nice.
We've found the rainy season to be a great time to visit, rains mostly late afternoon/night in western Honduras and sometime in the afternoons in the Guatemala highlands with the rest of the day typically sunny and clear. If you're planning to visit the Bay Islands, the rainy season there typically starts in the fall instead of Junish.
Technically June through November is hurricane season with the worst storms later, in general. Heavy rains can be more apparent than the wind and can cause delays on travel days. After 9 summer trips to CA, though, we've never had a storm ruin a trip. Have a great time, whenever you go, and check out my photos and recommendations if you're interested:
