Are the beaches public property?

We are thinking of going to Utila next winter and renting a beach house. Are the beaches open to the public? That is can we walk along the beach and do some snorkeling or would we be resticted to what is available right in front of our rental? Is there public access to most of the beaches?

all beaches (the first 30ft from high tide) are public access and can be walked along,

in my opinion the best beach houses and snorkeling are away from utila town ie. treasure beach, jack neal beach and pine point beach. there are no really nice beaches in or around town.

OK thanks. I would prefer a boat access house with some good wade fishing available nearby. Are there any areas that would be better than others? We would also like to get diving certified, would it be best to stay in town during the certification or would the dive shop pick us up (or would we have to arrange for a water taxi)?

if you stay at a boat access only place on the southwest shore you should be able to arrange for either capt. morgans or utopia resort' dive boats to pick you up from your beach (we liked diving with utopia' boat the best). i would highly recommend the pineapple house on treasure beach, we saw tarpon and bonefish around there and the snorkeling in front of the house was beautiful.

Divenuts is correct-one of the great things about Utila is that you can walk along the beaches without coming into any big walls or barracades!

For beach access only houses, don't forget the other ones on the South Shore in the Coral Beach area too- Pelicans Nest (on VRBO as "Spacious Secluded Beach" and DestinationUtila.com), Casa Miradora, and Casa Tranquila.

Pelicans Nest also now has 2 fly fishing kayaks for your use too- great fly fishing in the lagoon behind the house, and located in front of a great bay.

These homes, plus the ones Divenuts mentioned are really nice alternatives for really enjoying some seclusion and a different sense of Utila! Of course the ones just off town offer a great option too- really depends on what you are looking for.

Another option is Big Rock Cabana. You can find it listed on Flipkey.
