Who posted about that skype-like program for cell phones?

Somebody posted in the forum about a program for your smart phone. It was like Skype, I think, but for your mobile phone.

I did a search but could not find it.

I know what you're talking about as it caught my eye too. I'm pretty sure it's called Viber.

Ok, it looks pretty cool, and will work for calls and texts from anywhere with Wi-Fi.

Yes but the people you're calling need to have it on their phone too, as far as I know.

That could be a problem. I want to be able to communicate with my petsitter.

we are getting a cell phone from "at your service" in roatan. you might want to check it out, as I'm not so clear how good the wifi is for skype or anything else.

Our place has one of those internet sticks, not sure how they work. They also provide a cell phone that works locally and we just have to pay for the minutes.

We have used a Tigo wifi modem stick in West End for the last 3 years and it works fine for Skype.

Re: Tigo stick & Skype....

If the Tigo stick is plugged into an external modem & it allows you to use a wifi on your computers & phones then you can do it. Using Skype or similar can be super frustrating because sometimes the Internet here can crawl or go in & out. & that's with both tigo & claro and those are your only options. So just be prepared and patient. Around here everything runs on " island time" the people, the resteraunts & even the Internet! :)

I just take my american cell phone because text messaging is cheap, especially to receive. I have my office just text me daily with any updates. Its like 10 cents a text for a verizon phone. I think to send one is more, maybe 50 cents, but still. Very effective way to communicate when out of the country.
