.We arrived via cruise ship and immediately exited the cruise port. We asked for a taxi to take us to West Bay. They hooked us up with Joseph Ferrufino a taxi driver for the day for $100 who was to stay with us the entire day. Lorraine was a tour guide who accompanied him and was expected to be tipped at the end of the day. Initially I was not to keen on all this , but thought what the heck , it can't be that bad. It was a pleasant day with the two of them and Lorena was a wealth of information. Having the van (taxi) with us at all times turned out to be great.
We headed to the monkey farm which was a great adventure and lots of fun. The adult children had a blast. We then headed to the Mayan Princess at West Bay (a private resort) that allows you on the premise for $10 per person. A beautiful beach area, with your own chairs. Joseph hooked us up with a snorkel boat and we headed out to the reef. I later found out as we walked the beach, we probably could have snorkled directly out to the reef from shore. Nevertheless, we had our own snorkel gear, so the boat ride rate was very favorable. We grabbed lunch under a Cabana at the Mayan Princess with Joseph and Lorena as our guest.
We walked the beach and did some "haggling" with merchants selling various things. All in all a great day. Joseph got us back to the cruise port in plenty of time to do some additional shopping. Mahogany Bay (cruise port) is absoluely beautiful and we could have stayed there all day. But we wanted to get out and about on the island.
