Paya Bay for Honeymoon

We are booking a last minute honeymoon (we had to reschedule due to illness) and after lots of research have chosen to stay at Paya Bay Resort from July 21-28. Have we made a good decision? We are looking for lots of R&R and snorkeling! We are planning on renting a car one day to do some of the more touristy stuff (dolphin swim, iguana farm, some shopping, ect). The rest of the time we want to lay on the beach, swim and snorkel! We are also interested in a beginner scuba dive, horseback riding, a beach massage, and a trip to Pigeon Cay (all offered through the resort).

Do you think we will be happy with our resort choice? Also, do you think we should take advantage of the meals included option? It sounds like we will only have the ability to go elsewhere for food on the day we have the rental car, so we are seriously considering it. Lastly, is there anything not to miss on our day with the car?

Any and all opinions and information would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks so much,

Emily (and Tom)

We where at Camp Bay Last spring and stopped at Paya for a lunch and dinner. It's a stunningl location and the food was great. You could potentially walk to Camp Bay and LaSirena, maybe 3 miles via beach. The dinners are served family style with everyone who is staying there eating together. Also keep in mind that just about every week is a naturalist week and 2 of the 3 beaches allow nude bathing and you might be having dinner next to the old guy just wearing a sarong.

I would also recommend getting a rental car for the week when staying on the east end. Feeling isolated is great but stuck not so much.

It is a bit far east and away from the more "tourist/attractions". If you rent a car keep in mind you would need to bring your own GPS, sure the island has few roads but if you like the possibility of driving without worries you might consider buying a GPS map at www.travelinghonduras.com

Have fun whatever you finally decide

Congrats EmeraldBee! Sorry I missed this before your trip. We stayed at Paya Bay last year and were VERY impressed. (We've made 30+ trips to various Caribbean places, and are looking forward to returning.)

It's a great place for R&R and snorkeling, and IMHO you'll be very happy with your choice. The 2 small private beaches are excellent - pretty, nice swimming, and have plenty of shade if you want it. There are 2 free snorkel trips daily, which were superb - rivaled Cozumel IMO. There's not a lot of snorkeling from the beach however (some, but requires a swim), so the snorkel trips are an excellent activity.

The grounds are quite large and have some nice walking trails to the beaches, lookout points, etc. There are 13 rooms, and most have a pretty view of the water and surrounding coast. The rooms themselves are very nice - not posh, but comfortable, with AC and a small fridge (which we used extensively).

It's in a quiet, rural part of the island, so the meal plan is a good choice. Otherwise, you'd be driving 30+ minutes to restaurants & pubs. We did the meal plan and were very impressed. Food was VERY good, plenty of choices, and enough even for chow-hounds. I thought it was a bargain too. Some meals were order-off-the-menu, and others were family style (with a ~2 hour time span, so you don't have to be there at a certain fixed time).

The staff was really outstanding too. Everyone - the owners, housekeepers, kitchen staff & groundskeepers were super nice and glad to do whatever they could for us guests. Among the best & nicest service I've had anywhere.

So... we liked it and are looking forward to going back. :)

Chris and LIz...

We discovered Paya Bay at the end of our two week honeymoon in July and -like you- I have been to other tropical locales (Virgin Islands, Hawaii, Greece) and definitely want to go back for a full week. It's amazing. Unbelievable.
