Is there a serious security risk or not ?

Hi, I've planned a trip with friends in December 2012 to this place and like to check here on security.

The schedule looks likes this. We'll fly in in the morning. we avoided overland busntravelling by using a plane to arrive to this region. After meeting up with our guide, we''ll continue on to the ruins of Tikal for a private tour. After lunch, we'll explore the ruins. In the evening, we'll travel to the shores of Lake Peten Itza to settle in to our hotel. Next day, we'll visit the Ixpanpajul national park. The morning thereafter, we'll head early in the morning to the Flores airport.

I have been worried about some forum postings on security in this area. With regards to our schedule, is there a security risk ? What is the actual situation ? Is there anything particular we can do ? Does our group need to hire a security guard ?

There is not a security risk, unless you go looking for trouble. You do not need to hire a security guard, either. You're worrying for nothing. Here's the deal. Don't go hiking by yourselves any time of the day (or night) and keep your wits about you at all times, too. Don't flash money, jewelry or expensive cameras around. You'll be fine.
