2 days / 1 night in Lake Atitlan

Hi,

We are thinking of visiting Lake Atitlan afer spending 1 night in Antigua. What are some recommendations for 1) a budget but clean place to stay near Lake Atitlan, and 2) what are the top 2-3 activities to do given our short time? We'd love to see the lake as well as hike the volcanoes, but am not sure if we can fit both in. Any advice is appreciated!

Also is it recommended to book a tour from Antigua in advance or is it ok to find a tour when we get to Lake Atitlan?

Mario's Rooms on Santander in Panajachel is an excellent value - check out the reviews and photos here on Trip Advisor. I enjoy hiking in the Panajachel Reserve (there's a zipline there, too) and taking a boat to other villages (San Juan, San Pedro, and Santiago, maybe?) could take up most of a day. Happy trails!

Hiking the San Pedro volcano is high on peoples "must do list", until the realize it is a very strenuous hike that typically takes 7-8 hours of hard hiking. The hike starts at 5500 ft. and ends just shy of 10,000 ft. above sea level. Post hike experience range from "very rewarding" to "what was I thinking". If you are in good physical condition, wear appropriate hiking shoes, take adequate water, sun screen, and food; then you are on the right track.

If not, there are plenty of lovely hikes around the lake shore.

I agree with hopefullist list: Atitlan Nature Reserve, San Juan and San Pedro, plus Santiago if you have time.

All of the established tour operators have websites or can be found through T.A. posts, etc. This will at least give you an idea of the possibilities.

Happy Planning.

If you want to maximize your time, make tour arrangements in advance. Otherwise you waste precious time looking for the right tour that fits your needs. Days start early on the lake, and you can already be 2-3 hours into a tour by the time you talk to a few people on the street.
