One way car rental in Guatemala City to Belize City

One way car rental in Guatemala City to Belize City: planning to spend 10 days over Christmas/New years in Guatemala, planning to rent a car and drive around. After our trip to Tikal, Flores would want to cross into Belize and finish our trip there, dropping off the car in Belize City airport. Is it possible? Anybody has done it?

You could rent three individual cars in GUA, Flores, and Belize, drive around those areas all you like, and fly in between them, and it would be safer and easier and more fun, and I bet it would even cost less. One way rentals in general are astronomical and between countries they become gigundously, humongously astronomical.

Did you end up driving a car? We are coming in June and are curious about this.

I have not heard of any agencies in Guatemala that would allow Belize drop-off. There are so many areas of Guatemala where I wouldn't want a car (Antigua, Lake Atitlán, the long trip to Flores) that combining buses, share shuttles, private drivers, and flights has always worked well for us over dozens of visits. That said, short term renting for specific areas or trips could be a great idea, especially off the beaten track.

Thanks for your reply. We ended up getting a car in Belize city airport/dropping it off at Belize City. When crossing into Guatemala arranged a transportation (car) separately.

I wonder how many times more money renting a car cost rather than not renting one. My guess would be about five times as much.

Rental was expensive, but as we went with kids, so for 4 of us the shuttling around, constantly making arrangements in order to move around did not make financial or practical sense either. Plus it allowed the freedom to travel at your own schedule - which is a big perk in my opinion.

We ended up altering our itinerary: went to Belize, crossed into Guatemala (Tikal area), and then - back into Belize. Had a rental car in Belize, but were not able to take it across the boarder per rental agreement (I heard some companies allow to cross for a few days); then hired a driver to take us to Tikal and back to Belize after few days in Guatemala. Will have to come back to Antigua & Atitlan on a separate trip.

Only international car rentals usually allow dropping cars in different countries. Using a driver in Belize and renting in Guatemala would be advice. Most likely you could cross borders when the company is aware but unlikely in this area according to my experience crossing borders with a rented car because political issues among both governances.

How did you hire a driver? Where do I look to do that? We are flying into Honduras, visiting Copon. We will take the bus across to Guatemala and then want to go up through Belize and into Tulum, Mexico. Any advice you have would be appreciated. We are 2 adults and 2 teenagers. Thank you.

Here are 2 transportation providers I’ve been pleased with in Guatemala for share shuttles, private transfers, and flight arrangements:

Adrenalina Tours: http://www.adrenalinatours.com

Rainbow Travel: http://www.rainbowtravelcenter.com

Our favorite private driver, Alfredo Garcia, is bilingual, personable, prompt, and safe, and has nice vehicles: alf.transport@yahoo.com
