Travel from Guatemala City to Antigua at night

Hi,

We are planning to go to Guatemala for a week from the 24th to the 31st of december. The flight we found lands at guatemala city at 8:45pm. We would like to travel to Antigua and spend the first night there and we were wondering if the roads are safe. We are planning to take a taxi/shuttle from the airport to the hotel in Antigua.

Thanks.

I've never had any safety issues on that road. If I arrive during the day I just hop a share shuttle, $10/pp. If I arrive in the evening which is often the case, I arrange a shuttle ahead. I have my favorite hotel do it for me but there are lots of providers - let me know if you need/want a recommendation. You could also hire a driver on the spot for a private ride. Cost for a private shuttle should be $35ish that time of night, shared cost (probably up to 3 people).

There are also some great hotel options 2 or 3 minutes from the airport if you feel more comfortable staying the night close by and shuttling to Antigua in the morning. Happy trails!

Thanks hopefulist. We would prefer getting to Antigua that night so we can start the morning there, walk around and arrange for a tour to Pacaya.

I looked at Quinta de las Flores as an accommodations option, but I would love more recommendations (for a tour operator as well).

Thanks!

My favorite hotel is Casa Cristina - secure, good value, and well located with cute, clean (but not large) rooms, really helpful owners, a great coffee house nearly next door, and my favorite hole in the wall lunch stop, ice cream shop, and Spanish school around the block.

I generally use Adrenalina Tours for private transportation (when I have groups in tow) and share shuttles. They offer Pacaya tours but I can't comment - I hadn't started using their services 6 years ago when I last hiked Pacaya.

For what it's worth, here are 2 fabulous Antigua options I just did last summer. Happy trails!

Keep in mind NOche Bunea (24th December) is not a normal night and not recommended to be on the road because of drunk drivers celeb rating. You, can easily find good B&B places near the airport at very reasonable rates. Good luck.
