Land transport from GC to Tikal

We will be in Guatemala for just over two weeks in February 2013 and would like to see Tikal. We are all experienced travellers but it is the first time to Guatemala for any of us. With five of us the flights add too much to the cost. I know there are overnight buses, but with five people is hiring a car and driver a viable option? Also, are the overnight buses safe, seems there have been some comments that these buses are the target for robbers. Thankful for any advice.

The first class buses in Guatemala are perfectly safe. The chicken buses are, too. Why would you think otherwise? The only problem with robberies in the past has been with San Juan buses, especially between Flores and Tikal.

Your cheapest option would be to use buses. A private driver with minivan would be cheaper than flying, too.

With five people, you might look at renting a car on your own.
