Highway Construction-Xela/Antigua?

On the Lonely Planet thorntree site, someone wrote in 1/08 that the highway between Xela and Antigua was being worked on (turned into 4-lane highway) and consequently there were lengthy delays.

Does anybody know if this construction is still ongoing, or whether it was finished? Also, is the construction happening on just the north/south side of the highway, or is south/north affected as well?

We are leaving for our first Guate trip on 8/19 and I just want to know everything --

I was probably the one that wrote that thread. But I never said that there were lengthy delays. They're still working on the PanAmerican (CA-1) highway from Chimaltenango to Cuatro Caminos which is past the turn off to Panajachel. But you can expect only minor 10-15 minute delays at certain points. Thus, there is no reason to be concerned about finding an alternate route. You'll be fine driving in guatemala as long as you don't drive at night because of the lack of proper road hazard warning signs. Good luck.

The PanAmerican (CA-1) highway from Antigua to Xela was in very decent condition the last time I was there. The majority of it now is 4 lane and fairly new. This was last month. Something to keep in mind do is that the highway conditions can change drastically on this highway and there is always construction. But you shouldn't have any problems and minimal delays if any at all.
