First time visiting Costa Rica. Where to do we stay/go??

My husband and I are planning our first trip to Costa Rica. We would like some relaxing/beach time with a bit of adventure. Zip-lining, hikes, exploring the rainforest.

Where would be the best place to stay? Should we stay in 2 different areas? We have 5 days of travel and our budget is about $150/night for accommodations.

If you have only 5 days then I would pick one place and plant yourself. Distances between areas are deceiving and you do not want to spend your vacation on the road. Depending on what airport you are using I would say hit the beach. If you fly into Liberia then look in Guanacaste, if you fly into San Jose then choose something like Manuel Antonio or Dominical / Uvita.

Manuel Antonio sounds like a very good option for you--beach, wildlife, ziplines in the area. Nice paved roads the entire way there.

You could do 1-2 nights near Tarcoles, around halfway between Manuel Antonio and the airport, so you can explore the Tarcoles river by boat safari and also hike in more diverse ecosystems--dry, transitional, and rainforest at Carara (Manuel Antonio is a transitional forest) as well as seeing the scarlet macaws.
