Driving in Costa Rica? Border Crossings?

Hello-

According to some old forum posts, driving in Costa Rica is relatively safe and feasible. Is this still the case, or have conditions changed dramatically in the past two years? Also, what is the status for border crossings while driving a rental vehicle? Possible? Or a definite No?

Thank you in advance!

Driving is better than ever. Most roads are in good shape.

As for crossing the border in a rental car -- there are a couple of agencies that can arrange this: Alamo and National. You can check their websites for details: http://www.alamocostarica.com/

National: https://www.natcar.com/main.cfm
