Local beer and spirits?

What are CRs local beers and other alcoholic beverages? We love trying local alcohol wherever we go so we will definitely look out for local drinks. What do you recommend we try?

Florida Ice and Farm has the local beer monopoly. Costa Rica has the most expensive beer in Central America do this this politically protected monopoly and very high importation taxes on competitive beers.

Costa Rica Beers are actually cheaper in Nicaragua and panama then they are in Costa Rica. The Oligarchy here does a very good job protecting their own at the expense of the general population. This company has become so wealthy setting beer and distribution prices and fleecing the small population in Costa Rica that they have recently purchased both the largest Bakery chain here Mus Manni) and North American breweries which includes Genesee, Pyramid, Dundee, etc. and the US distribution rights to LaBatts. Their well connected shareholders will thank you form helping them buy this years Range Rover as last years ash tray is full.

That said: beers are Imperial, Bavaria, Pilsen, Rock and various forms (Lite, with lime, etc.) Except for a couple struggling Micro brews like Segua, that's your beer options. Think of Imperial = Bud, Pilson = Miller, Bavaria = Michalob, Rock = Silly flavored beer. Some groceries will import foreign beers.

Local Liquor. Guaro. Cacique. Cheap 60 proof cane liquor. Centario Rum, (The Flor de Cana from Nicaragua is also common). Many locals drink Scotch but Bourbon is hard to find. Occasionally you might find Jack Daniels.

There is also a struggling Micro Brew out of Cartago with Segua (The red is OK, the white not so much). A brew pub in La Fortuna also exists.

We liked Imperial the best. If you can find it, try some of the Nicaraguan beer that is available in the grocery stores- it was very good.

The Nicaraguan beer is Toña.

By the way, you should also be able to find a six pack of Imperial in the US for a cheaper price than you will be able to buy the same six pack here in Costa Rica. Its distributed up there.

Local beer is cheap. About $2 beer. Spirits in bars not expensive either. Found wine in restaurants a bit dear tho.
