best area to spend a month hiking and birding?

We would like to spend March some place close to nature - but we would also like amenities like wifi and TV, within walking distance to a town. Suggestions for the best area for a month long rental? (We'll be spending February in Manuel Antonio)

How big a town? I was going to say Orosi Valley as a beautiful area with great birding but I would find it too isolated without a car.

Also check out Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui (the other Puerto Viejo-not the one on the beach) which has great birding in a lush area.

That is a tough one. With so many excellent locations for birding, yet they are also very different. Why walking distance to a town? Birding for a month and not having a car to move around seems pretty odd, and difficult to do in Costa Rica, IMHO. However, apart of above mentioned places you might check also San Vito and the other Puerto Viejo on the caribbean coast, and Puerto Jimenez on Osa peninsula. Basically, every town or bigger village is a good place to stay as wildlife is prolific in Costa Rica.

Take a look here: http://www.costaricanbirdroute.com/sites.htm

I would also consider the Tenorio area. At Heliconias Lodge and around the neighborhood, they have a bird list of over 300 species. While Heliconias Lodge is not the best place to stay (no TV and probably no WiFI) - there are other choices nearby.

For the best birding, I would not stick to one area. Maybe 2 or 3. Perhaps the Costa Rican Bird Route sites and then the Tenorio area. You can do day trips from Tenorio to Guanacaste to see Magpie Jays and Caracaras. You can also do day trips to Cano Negro for a huge array of waterbirds.
