Do I need a 4x4 car in Costa Rica?

I booked a Yaris for 11 days in Costa Rica mid February. However, one of my friends told me that I really need a 4x4 car in Costa Rica. When I look online it says that you are fine with a normal car, when you visit the famous places, plus it's not rain reason.

What do you guys recommend? :)

Im a Pro driver and drive people all over around MY country...every day.

You are correct is dry season..and most of our roads are in great shape,

Some negative people that do not even drive while in Costa Rica...willk recommend the contrary...!!

You do not need a 4x4..

Not a 4x4 however an SUV will give you better driving comfort.

If you are not fording streams or going "off road" on the muddy roads 2WD is fine

Wietske, Check out https://www.adventure-inn.com/blog/2012/02/15/renting-a-2wd-vs-a-4wd-in-costa-rica/ . The two major factors are the season and where you will be driving.

We just came back from CR and rented a 4x2 from Vamos. Looking back, I really wish we had gotten the 4x4, which was only $50 more.

Wayz often recalculated in the mountains and took me the wrong way on our next to last day, about 18km through Quetzal national park, which had very rough roads and I got a flat tire. A kind tico helped me change it but it was a pain.

4x4's also have more power. Our 4x2 struggled going up the very steep roads we often found ourselves on in Arenal and Copey de Dota and in the Copey valley.

If we ever go back, I am definitely renting a 4x4.

The OP never told us where he or she was going?

we drove 1300kms from SJO to Arenal to the Osa and back in April 2018 in a 2WD SUV and it was fine. There were some shallow rivers to cross in the Osa but we had no problems.

I'd definitely go with an SUV if only for the clearance and better views though.
