Discouraged about Trip to Tikal transportation

So after being told that the Tikal Inn would pick us up in San Ignacio for $40 each I am now being told that it will be at the Guatamala border for $100 for both of us and that is just one way. I believe I read about a couple trying to get out of Tikal and this happened to them. They aren't even addressing how to get from Tikal to Flores. We are supposed to spend 2 nights there. I haven't contacted the private tour busues yet to see if we can catch a ride out of SI. I have visions of us sticking our thumbs out for the trip back. I thought Costa Rica was going to be expensive but this is proving to be just as much w/no rental car and staying at pretty inexpensive places. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated. We leave August 10th. We are an adventurous couple but w/2 kids in college I try to make our money go as far as possible. Thanks everyone!

The transport costs do add up but the trip is well worth it. We went a month ago and it was pretty spectacular. We winged it and it was still pretty smooth. We took a taxi from si to the border. 12 bucks. You then have to pay an exit fee per person. Something like 25 dollars per person. Then you have to pay a couple dollars each for some kind of passport fee. Didn't really understand what it was for. There were a couple of cabs there on the other side of border and it was 70 dollars to tikal. We arranged for the driver to pick us up when we left to get back to belize for 70. Then there was the park entrance fee. Then there was an early entrance fee attached to the sunrise tour. So yeah you get nickle and dimed. But looking back it was worth every penny.

Jaguar Inn used to offer a a private mini-bus transfer from Tikal at 7:30am to hook up with the San Juan Express bus to Belize City for 250 Quetzales, including the express bus ticket. You don't have to be a guest at Jaguar Inn to take this. Contact them directly to confirm that they still offer this and the price.

Thanks both of you. I poured over posts this weekend and think we have a basic idea now. I will contact Jaguar Inn to see if we can book a return trip. We're really looking forward to the trip. Joanne

My husband and I will be traveling from San Ignacio to Tikal for one night in July. We are using Mayan Heart Adventure Tours to transport us to the Jaguar Inn from our resort in San Ignacio. The cost is $35 per person (cheaper than the transportation offered by Jaguar Inn). They are picking us up directly from our resort. Marisa from Mayan Heart Adventures has very competitive prices and has been by far the easiest to communicate with in planning our Belize vacation. The Jaguar Inn is $80/night and if your sunrise/sunset tours are booked in advance they are $15/person.

We found that this was the most cost effective way to visit Tikal. Hope this helps!

We have 2 1/2 days of inland activities to plan (out of 7) and wondering if the hassle of trying to go to Tikal is worth it, or shall I just stick to stuff to do in Belize (caves, hiking).

If it was me, given the time available, I would stick to the many activities that Belize has to offer. Lot's of fun stuff to do.

Tikal is amongst the most impressive sites in the Mayan empire. Or visit Caracol in Belize

If it is worth it depends on you. We can't answer as we all have different interest and experience. It was worth it for me.

Hi...Just booked with Marissa at www.mayanheartworld.net. Absolutely amazing to deal with via email. We are booking a two-person San Ignacio (from our hotel) to Tikal (to our hotel) for $35 USD each, and the round trip back a couple days later. Total transport costs for two people = $140 USD. Naturally there is the exit fee and the entrance fee to Guatemala (not included), nor is the park entrance fee included ($23 USD PP, last time I looked). The great part about the Mayan Heart World transportation is that the Belizean driver escorts you through immigration/customs and personally hands you off to your Guatemalan driver (and vice versa on the return). Hope this helps!
