Is it possible to rent a guide at the cave tubing site?

We are staying at either Windy Hill Resort or The Aguada Hotel (thoughts?) - we shall be renting a car and wondering how possible it is to drive ourselves to the cave tubing and hire a guide there seeing as we have transport? Seems silly to also pay for a complete tour. Does one even need a guide to go cave tubing? We are thinking of either Jaguar Paw Cave Tubing or Yaha Creek - thoughts?

Last question! Want to also visit Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve - again can we drive ourselves there and then hire a guide - would you suggest booking one in advance?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Yes. At Nohoch Che'en(Jaguar Paw), there are guides. Fryjack is who I've used scores of times. For MPR, hire John Chuc, who owns Kin Winik tours. He's the best for MPR.

Thank you DrFeelAwesome! Should I contact Fryjack in advance (do you have contact info) for cave-tubing? how much can I expect to pay for 4 people (curious)? We only have about a 1.5 days in the area, how long will the cave tubing take - not sure if we'll have time for MPR as well - what do you think? Also which hotel would you recommend - Windy Hill or Aguada? Thanks in advance!

Cave tubing is half day, and Mountain Pine Ridge is a full day if you include Caracol.

Both hotels are comparable, but Aquada is more centrally located to town and the tours you are considering. Aguada is just enough outside of town so it is not noisy, and they have a nice pool.

You will definitely have to book a guide for Pine ridge in advance, and I second the motion that John Chuc from Kin Winik is a great guide.

The number I have for Fryjack is 622.4941, and I assume he uses the same number. Aguada and Windy Hill are both great choices. The Aguada actually has an aguada on site, and Windy Hill is located on a hill with a good wind. The food at Aguada is amazing! The owner, Shalue, taught Culinary Arts at my school for many years - tangent alert: she taught Ingrid, who's teaching it now, and I am actually taking the class this semester, and loving it, and learning a lot. Made cheesecakes last night, and wow!

Anyways, haha, cave tubing is usually around $25us per person. There's a small fee to enter the park($5).

Enjoy!

This is great information. Thanks. Two followup questionsL

Does the $25US for cave tubing include the tube, etc or is it just the guide and you have to provide your own tube, etc.

I have read that you have to caravan into Caracol with a government (miliatary) escort? Is that true or can you drive yourself to visit Caracol on your own. If not, where and what time does the "caravan" form up and is there any fee for the escort?

Thanks again for your help.

No fee the caravan. They are there for your protection, and the protection of the natural resources in the area. You have to be there before 9 am, and most people actually enjoy the convoy. If you miss it they won`t stop you from going, it is at your own risk. We haven`t heard of any problems with visitors for years now. You do have to leave the park by 2pm.

All the best !!

The main reason I would recommend meeting up with the military escort is that the bumpy road can cause car trouble. One of the cars in the caravan we joined broke down, and the military escort was able to get it back up and running. Would not want to be stuck out there with a broken down car alone! Granted -- we were there during the rainy season, and the road was worse than usual.
