Since you'll only be a few miles from the jungle, I'd suggest Google'ing 'jungle lodge san ignacio' DuPlooy's is great, and they have the Belize Botanic Gardens on site. They usually come up number 1 for a reason. Bullet Tree Falls, which is only a 5 minute cab ride from downtown, and is on the Mopan river, also has quite a few jungle lodges.

Since you mentioned 'hotel:' If you want to stay at a hotel that feels like a really good North American hotel, then Tia Maria is the best in town. No noise, yet only a few blocks from downtown, and a fourth or fifth of the price of SIRH.

Try the newly opened Mahogany Hall Boutique resort in Bullet Tree, its just four miles from town. Taxis to town run about $5 us.

The Aguada is a great deal in Santa Elena, just a few blocks from the bridge that separates SE from San Ignacio:

You can download a free lodging book (at least I think it's still free) from Lan Sluder at www.belizefirst.com

Happy trails!
