Safety/Tikal

Will be staying at Chaa Creek and taking a trip to Tikal - have heard some about crime to and from Tikal. Can anyone comment on this?

A couple of years ago there were some Guatemalan bandits who caused problems up in that area, they are now in jail. Security has been greatly stepped up, and there have been no problems that I am aware of since. Dr FG will no doubt comment.

You will love Chaa Creek and Tikal!

There has always been issues with bandits en route to Tikal, much less frequent now that the road is paved and vehicle move more swiftly and security is stepped up. I've sent hundreds of clients over the years and never had a problem. The site is so impressive and these incidents so infrequent, its absolutely worth seeing, without concern. Just leave your at Chaa Creek. On another note, if CC thought there might be a risk to guests, they would not offer Tikal.

Sorry, paved in most places, especially in the remoter part of the road where the bandits took advantage of slow moving vehicles.
