Hi; Cayo is a great base for activities; I recommend duPlooy's Jungle Lodge. If you want to sit on the beach an snorkel for the other days, IMO you can't do better than Pelican Beach on South Water Caye. The beach is beautiful (and right out your door) and it's walk-in snorkeling from there. Highly relaxing and great family accommodations. Lots of reviews of both places here on TA. Have been to both properties twice.
thank you Tellurian. Will look at both of those options!
South Water Caye is amazing, albeit small like most cayes are. Like Tellurian mentioned, you can put on your gear in your room, and walk to the snorkeling. I recommend googleing 'jungle lodge san ignacio' which usually brings up DuPlooy's first. You'll get a good idea of what there is out there. DuPlooy's has the Belize Botanic Gardens on site, and they are great.
Enjoy your trip!
Thank you! looked at DuPlooys but it appears to be booked. so does Chaa Creek. any other suggestions? we will have 3 kids with us so I am thinking pool would be nice. looked at Mahogany hall and they might have room. Thank you!
Did you check for availability at Chaa Creek's Jungle Camp?
Another favorite of ours - great budget place - is the Trek Stop.
Check out Table Rock Jungle Lodge as well, food is excellent, and although no swimming pool, the river with complementary kayaks and tubes is right there.
Another option would be Macaroni Hill View Hotel and Restaurant, no pool but river is just 5 minutes away and they have kayaks you can use and have fun.
They are not in San Ignacio but on the hummingbird highway, they are really close to Dangriga and Placencia so if you decid on South Water Caye the trip will only be 20 minutes to get to Dangriga where you can get a boat to go to the cayes.
Placencia is also a laid back village with a nice sea and many hotels with pools. If you decide to stay somewhere without a pool, Robert's Grove resort just started a package where you can spend the day at the resort and use all their pools, toys, kayaks etc for a real good price.
and even some sailing while in Placencia would be great for the family and since you guys are 10 you can get great group discounts at www.belizesailingcharters.com
MiloGato- have you determined your itinerary yet? I have just begun researching Belize for my family with 3 kids to do Thanksgiving week. We, too, want a combo of jungle & beach with shore snorkeling. Are you renting a vehicle, too?
