Thank you for the recommendation on renting over taxi. What rental company did you use - were you using Belize Auto Rental from this thread title or another?

We will be taking the water taxi out to Caye Caulker as well, glad to hear that works out fine.

MOB17- Yes, we used Belize Auto Rental. He used one of those older hand held cc things so He gave us the whole CC slip(carbons) back (our deposit). I did check online and there had been no charge just to make sure.

The Ford Escape ran fine and with the price of gas the 2WD was fine.

BEWARE, unless you have a DEATH WISH!, or enjoy being broken down on a Belizean roadway. Don't let the website fool you. The cars from this company are over 20 years old. We recently rented from them and the right wheel control arm detached while we were turning a corner in Corozal. My husband had to fix it on the side of the road, with tools from passerbys, since no one answered the phone. We tried for hours and no answer or return call from all the messages we left. We made it to Carribean Tire, still no answer from the car rental company. Carribean Tire indicated that we could have been killed if we were driving faster on the highway when the control arm detached. Luckily, we were turning a corner after a stop sign after driving from Sartenja. The control arm was re-tightened, but the alignment was really off and we had to drive through the rainforest to Hopkins in the dark......Incredibly stressful. I finally emailed Hugh and he responded. No other cars available and its being picked up to be fixed. We were without a car for 2 days. The car was finally returned and we were promised a refund for the 2 days. Well, its been 3 days and we haven't heard from Hugh. On top of that, we left a very basic cell phone which needed SIM card to make local calls in Belize, in the car when the car was taken to the mechanic. Stolen.....no where to be found when the car was returned...and no response from Hugh. We are in the process of trying to contact Hugh for our refund. We'll keep you posted..

I do appreciate yours and the other commentators who are pointing out that we are not affiliated with certain other companies. I understand there are sooo many car rentals and most of them have similar names, so it could be confusing for potential travelers. AQ Belize Car Rental still upholds the reputation of being straight forward, most info on our rental can be found on our site, if not, you may email info@aqbelizecarrental.com to get an answer in black and white. We do now accept all major credit cards including American Express-in fact we are more confident in American Express than any other cards.

No it isn't Belize Auto Rentals http://belizeautorentals.actionboysbelize.com/ and AQ Belize http://aqbelizecarrental.com/ is completely different companies, but to get keywords in most rental companies have similar names. AQ Belize does have cheaper basic rentals as well as newer model and priced accordingly rentals.

Warning: Do not rent from any car rental agency owned by a Hugh Samuel Jex. Belize Car Rental, Tropical Car Rental, Belize Auto Rental...there are other names. Horrible experience in February 2017. High mileage, badly used cars. Alarms and warning lights on and off, missing parts,worn tires, unsafe for the roads and the renters. Ask before you rent. We had a very bad experience with this company in FEB, 2017
