Can't decide between Placencia and San Pedro

We are spending 6 nights in Cayo and then want some beach/pool/snorkel/chill out times. We are pretty young (late 20s) and easy going. Don't mind if things are lively or quiet!! Only thing I will say is that I am currently afraid to swim in the sea though would like to try overcome this this holiday!!

Currently torn between Ranguana Lodge and Banana Beach resort.

Any ideas/help?

I don't think there's a pool at Ranguana, if you want to get wet and don't want to swim in the ocean, that could be a consideration.

Snorkel trips are shorter from Ambergris since the reef is less than a mile from shore vs. 19 miles from Placencia.

I prefer Ambergris, many people prefer Placencia. Ambergris is certainly busier and more 'touristy'. In Belize, though, that's a relative term.

Here's a vote for Placencia. As the previous poster said, Placencia is less toursity than San Pedro, and it has a great vibe. There are a couple places with music and dancing, and a lot of great bars and restaurants. The beach at Placencia has shallow, warm, calm water - perfect for getting used to being in the ocean.
