July trip-excursions and weather

We are going to be staying on Ambergris Caye (most likely the Grand Caribe). Our plan was to fly to Belize City and then fly to the island. If we want to do the cave tubing/zip line tours wouldn't be best to stay the first night in Belize City, do the tours and then fly over to the island? Or, possibly do it at the end of the trip. Does the island get as much rain as the mainland? If so, is it so much that we should reschedule the trip for another month?

It does make sense to stay on the mainland for your first night, but if you have time, try to get to San Ignacio for your first night and avoid Belize City. Some tours companies are based in San Ignacio.

Depending on where you finish your mainland activities, you could fly to San Pedro from the Maya Flats airstrip near San Ignacio (with Tropic Air), or head back to Belize City and fly from the Municipal airport (not International).

In general, the north of Belize gets less rain than the south, and I think Ambergris would get less rain than the mainland. But rain tends to fall overnight and the days are fine & sunny. We seldom get all-day downpours.

If you want to improve your chance of avoiding rain, come in mid-August when there is a well-known dry spell.

Hi Lisa F. Last year we had very little rain on Ambergris Caye in July, but it's hard to predict as we had an unusually rainy period at the end of the year right through January. Weather can be very unpredictable in the tropics, though we get considerably less rain normally than the rest of the country. Have you thought about staying somewhere outside of Belize City? San Ignacio, as mentioned above, is a good choice, but there are plenty of other options. You can, of course, do your zip lining and cave tubing tours from Ambergris Caye as well. It depends on how much time you want to spend in one location and how you feel about a long day of travel. It's a balancing act which very much depends on your needs and wants. If you're looking for some adventure in your trip, think about one of the many fabulous adventure resorts such as Caves Branch and perhaps doing a surf and turf style holiday.

I also wouldn't recommend staying in BC. Maybe the TEC at the zoo. Cayo would be the best choice, buy you'd want to stay a few nights, at least. I'd also recommend Ian Anderson's Caves Branch, and they have some amazing excursions too.
