Apilachicola area worth detouring for?

I've been trying to find info about our upcoming trip and am striking out. Here's the background. We've been going to Destin for almost 20 years for spring break, but this year are going to add some extra time with family and driving from WI to Hilton Head, then on to Destin. We enjoy driving (drove 5000 miles last fall to the Southwest) and last year flew to Lauderdale by the Sea and drove to Sanibel and the Keys.

I've heard that the Apalachicola area is beautiful so we're planning on making an extra stop from HH to Destin and doing some sight seeing both the first day and the next. We'll stop somewhere around Tallahasse, then take 98/30/319 to Destin. Is it worth the extra time or should we just take I-10? How close to the water would we be?

I'm having a hard time finding a place to post this question. No-one answered in the Tallahassee forum, and I brought it into a Ft. Walton Beach forum when someone suggested Port St. Joe, but I don't want to hijack the original poster.

Any Apalachicola area fans out there?

Yes, Apalach is worth detouring if you like 3 of my favorite things: water, seafood and southerners. Have you stumbled onto the set of a Tennessee Williams play or is this place for real? It is real...the real Florida and you have to wonder if Sidney Lanier passed through and wrote a poem about it. The rivers, the gulf and the friendly Southern people, those born and raised here, those native to Florida and others from the Deep South. This place is very protective of its own survival and thank God or else it might look more like occupied Florida further South. This is an old Cotton Port on the Panhandle of Florida with antebellum homes and sites highlighting this area's contributions to Florida's territorial times and the War Between the States. One of the last havens for the generational Florida Native and other Deep Southers who love Southern outdoors, Southern heritage and an authentic Dixie Coast experience.
