Best short hikes

Will be in Aspen in several weeks. What would be some not to miss hikes of 1-2 hours duration, relatively easy, and close to or short drive from Aspen. Planning to drive Independence Pass as well. Thank you!!!!!

The very popular hike in Aspen is at the Maroon Bells lake area. After 9 am take the bus only from Highlands up to trailhead area. You can walk around the Maroon lake or continue up further to Crater Lake. That would cover about 2 hours total of hiking. More info on all trails at

Definitely the hike to Crater Lake at the Maroon Bells. It's beautiful!

Yes, Maroon Bells, around the lake. Beautiful. Also go to Ashcroft (ghost town) and walk around there. Gorgeous! The trail to Cathedral Lake is beautiful, and you can just walk as short or as long as you want. You don't need to go all the way to the lake.

Since you'll be there a few weeks, definitely worth the drive over to Redstone and McClure Pass.

Once you have acclimated, the Ute and Ajax trails from downtown both provide a good look at the mountains and town. Both have steep sections but are short enough for your schedule.

Hunter Creek is another option that would allow you to turn around whenever you feel like it.

You can walk up Aspen Mtn., have lunch at Sundeck and take the gondola down.

To get much more exotic, you probably need more than 2 hours.

The US Forest Service office on the west side of town is a great resource. They have write-ups on different hikes, and some of the people who work there that I've spoken with have been great and know the hikes from personal experience.

This is a great book that has details for many hikes throughout the roaring fork valley. It tells you durations and well as details on how to reach the trailheads.

12 Short Hikes by Tracy Salcedo outlines the Rio Grand Trail, Sunnyside Trail, Aspen Town Stroll etc.

She also wrote "best easy day hikes Aspen".

We like the Grottos, John Denver Sanctuary, and walking around the neighborhood near the golf course.

We never tire walking around the Residential Streets.

Every year we discover something new, (on foot) !
