Great Sand Dunes NP

Can you see some of this national park from the main road? We will be driving from Durango to Colorado Springs where we will spend the night. We will then head to the Denver airport the next morning from Colorado Springs.

We really do not want to drive more than 6 hours that day so trying to make the drive more enjoyable and see some scenic areas on the drive.

Thanks

Which road? You can see the dunes way off in the distance from 285 but they are barely discernible without binoculars.

We are taking the route from Durango to Pagosa Springs to Alamosa to Pancho Springs, Manitou Springs and on to Colorado Springs.

Someone suggested that was a scenic route. Is there a better route? Thanks

Great Sand Dunes NP is less than an hour from Alamosa. If you drive up CO 17 to catch 285 to Poncha Springs, the detour to see the park is only 15 miles (one way). The views are great if you take that road (Ln 6N). Admission to the park is only $3. It is well worth it to go to the visitor center and view the dunes from there.

We just returned from a stay at the Dunes and was going to say exactly what Babalax did. It really is amazing and an easy place to get out and stretch the legs without getting to far off the beaten path. If you decide to make the stop and find you have more time, you can also go around the corner from the visitor center and walk the dunes. There is about 1/4 mile or so from the parking lot that is sand and you can feel the sand. You can also go up the dunes. There is a rinse station at the restrooms to get the sand off of you if needed. Also on the road to the dunes is Zapata Falls. A short drive up and you are at the trailhead. 1/2 mile walk next to a pretty creek area, walk behind the falls to get to the front side to see them.
