Travel ideas sought

Have plans to be in Anaheim and Disneyland area the week of Thanskgiving. I have heard reports that this is a great time to visit, except for the busyness.

Does anyone have suggestions as to what to do on Thanksgiving, or is it just a normal day in the area? What about Black Friday?

Are there any day bus trips that are fun to do while in the area that are not to the theme parks - is San Francisco or San Diego do-able?

Thanksgiving is a National Holiday in which many things are closed. Most people stay at home or visit family for a festive dinner with many of them hanging around to watch football. It would be a good day to hang out at the beach or similar.

Black Friday is a frantic and bizarre part of Americana.

Many people find the need to wait in line at ungodly hours just to purchase something at a discount. Occasionally things get out of hand and folks get trampled, pepper sprayed, or even killed because of the mom mentality.

San Francisco is not really a day trip. If you are in Southern California for only one week skip that city and the Highway 1 drive to get there for another trip.

San Diego can be a day trip but that can be an extremely long day. Spending a night or two would make more sense.

Does it have to be that week? We like to drive to BC for our Thanksgiving to find great restaurants that are open and to escape from the shopping craziness.

Most folks have a 4 day weekend.

Maybe post on the California forum for help with your overall itinerary.

Welcome to the forums 4vradiance,

Not sure what you mean when you say " I have heard reports that this is a great time to visit, except for the busyness." ?

Im not sure why you would think it was a great time to visit if its very busy?

If you adusted your trip till the week after Thanksgiving it would be better for you as crowds would be low, and still the same enjoyable experience.

There are tours that go from the Anaheim area to the LA area to look at things there ( which is about 45 min drive North of the Anaheim area). Some major Tour companies like Grayline Anaheim and Starline Tours, there are also beach tours.

You could also take the Train to San Diego and spend a few days there, its a nice City to visit. Its about a 90 min drive South of the Anaheim area.

As said, San Francisco is not a day trip from Anaheim, its a good 7 hour drive or so if you dont take the scenic drive.

You could consider flying there though for a few days if you dont want to spend a few days driving up the coast, as thier are inexpensive flights back and forth through Airline carriers such as Southwest.com, Jet Blue.

You can ask for help such as where to stay, and an itinerary for places you want to visit in the specific City forums you may want to visit as well when your ready.

I've heard very good things about the Thanksgiving meals offered at Knott's Berry Farm, which is in Buena Park about 6 miles from Disneyland. You should make reservations ahead of time. Their theme park begins the holiday shows that day, which includes a professional ice skating show (also featuring Snoopy), carolers, a holiday saloon show in their western Ghost Town, a holiday parade, and short versions of A Christmas Carol and The Gift of the Magi. It will be crowded that day, just as Disneyland will be. The main difference is the pace of visiting the Knott's can be slower if focusing on shows vs. rides whereas Disneyland shows get very crowded.

As for Black Friday, it is just a bunch of hype and shopping is much nicer prior to then. Stores will have sales anyway. Make sure to stay out of WalMart on that day.

Turn on the TV early Thanksgiving Day and watch the Macy's parade ~ it begins with Broadway show casts performing and the Rocketts.
