International SIM card
Save

We will be travelling to the USA from Australia early November. If we were to take our iphones with us (unlocked) is it better to get a SIM card before we leave Australia or when we arrive in the US? Which is cheaper? And can you recommend which provider to use? Thanks.

Have you looked at the AT&T prepaid sim, you can buy it through Amazon

and then load it up with what you need

Narelle,

We had a month in the States earlier this year and went to a phone shop and brought a Simple Mobile sim card. They set up my iPhone for me so it was working straight away. Cost was $105 but we had unlimited data, 40 hours international calls and unlimited national calls.

We had no problems with coverage and used it On the mainland and Hawaii. It was great having the freedom to call home when ever we wanted plus the data was Bonus for checking flights, tours, emails, banking tc....

Heading over in May 2013 for another month and plan on doing this again

There is company called TravelSIM. I have recently bought a SIM from them online. It is $50 plus then you have to purchase credit. The call/text rates are pretty good. I am not travelling until Dec so can't give you a report on how good it works.

The brand was "simple mobile" and we purchased it from a mobile phone shop front (store) in LA. It was well worth the money. The sim lasts for 12 months, alas we are going over just outside of the 12 months otherwise we would just had to recharge it but will need to purchase new one in May 2013. Oh yeah it had unlimited text for US and international.

This is the website. http://www.mysimplemobile.com/

I am really hoping this deal with the sim is still available when we go back

Narelle, we were in Anaheim 5 weeks ago and got 2 sims from a T-Mobile store at the Outlets at Orange shopping mall. The staff did everything including setting up access to data (ie APN). The plan was $2 a day unlimited voice, text and data US wide. You have to purchase 15 or 25 days (only counted when the phone is used that day), plus $10 activation fee. So all up $60 plus tax for each card. You can also buy international minutes but not sure how much as we opted not to. Only issue was that T-Mobile 3G coverage seemed to be non-existent in most areas, in fact I only saw it once during our trip (downtown San Francisco). This meant that data apps could be slow sometimes but generally OK, e.g. email was OK but Maps slow. Hope this helps.
