Fall Break 2012

Coming to the area on our fall break Oct 5-12. Will be in LA area half of the time and in San Diego visiting family half the time. Are area schools out during this time? what will crowds be like? Any suggestions? We are just getting started planning. We have been to WDW in FL several times over the past 5 years, but this is the kids first time to DL.( ages 10 and 7) We are planning on one day each at CA and DL. We do not have to see it all, just the highlights and differences from WDW. Kids will not do scary / thrill rides so that eliminates alot of waiting.

There are likely very few schools out - maybe a few year round schools that may be off track. The state of CA and many school districts have dropped Columbus Day from the holiday schedule but there may still be some that get that day so the weekend could be a 3 day weekend.

Oct is getting to be a busier time as its school breaktime for various out of Country guests, and there are the MIckey's Halloween Parties which also brings in more people.

In Oct of this year some other dates you may want to avoid would be

Oct 5-7 An unoffical event called "Gay days" in Anaheim

Oct 14 Choco walk in the Park

Oct 18-21 UEA (or Utahs Escape to Anaheim where Schools in Utah are on a break and head to Anaheim)

Hours for Oct would be something like 10 am till 8pm on the weekdays, and on the weekends ,Sat,Sun 8am till 12pm with Fireworks show and Fantasmic Show only being show on the weekend nights Sat,Sun and usually a nightly World of Color show

In Oct there will be the Mickey's Halloween Party nights that have usually been held on Tues and Fridays and some Mondays (although no offical dates will be announced for quite a while) throughout Oct where Disneyland closes early to regular guests around 5 or 6 pm, and you must purchase a special ticket to get into the Party. There would also be a special Fireworks show usually held on Party nights only.

Here is more info on the Party

wdwinfo.com/Disneyland/Events/Halloween.htm

Disneyland is different from Disneyland in a few ways, the two Parks California Adventure Park and Disneyland park are smaller and more compact, and are located directly across from each other so easy to just walk back and forth, hence the term Parkhopper which is generally recommended for more than a 1 day visit. Usually a 2 or 3 day Parkhopper is recommended for a visit.

So a common itinerary for a visit would look something like arrive at Disneyland Park right when it opens as there is less wait times on most attractions for that first few hours after opening, (and Disneyland Park opens first.) Then when it gets busy, hop over to California Adventure Park for a while.

Here is more info about the World of Color show in California Adventure park and the various viewing options for the show, which requires a special Fastpass to get into the viewing area.

These rides would only be offered at Disneyland not at Disneyworld

Alice in Wonderland

Casey Jr. Circus Train

Critter Country

Davy Crocket Explorer Canoes

Gadget's Go Coaster

Grand Canyon Diorama

Indiana Jones Adventure(which is a ride at Disneyland, and not a show)

Matterhorn Bobsleds

Mr. Toad's Wild Ride

New Orleans Square

Pinocchio's Daring Journey

Primeval World

Roger Rabbit's Car Toon Spin

Sailing Ship Columbia

Sleeping Beauty Walkthrough

Storybook Land Canal Boats

Tarzan's Treehouse

World of Color Show

Also, unlike Disneyworld, you can easily stay across the street from the Disneyland Main Entrance and walk into Disneyland.

Here is a Map of Hotels in the Disneyland area so you can see where things are located. The Disneyland Main Entrance is off of Harbor blvd near where it says "East Shuttle Area" on the Map.

There is also shuttle service for a little farther away Hotels with the Art Shuttle service

Thanks for the great reply!!! I will refer back to it often. We are thinking of hitting San Diego first and then back to LA for wed-Sat. Planning on maybe CA and DL for wed/Thu or Thu/ Fri. Fly home Sat. Will the Gay days bleed into the following week the 8-10th much?

HOJO kids suites are already booked up for this time!?!?

CHOC Walk, Childrens Hospital of Orange County. Great event for locals to volunteer to help at.

For Gay Days, Saturday the 6th they are in Disneyland and in DCA on Sunday so if you are there you can flip flop days to avoid the extra crowds. Go to DCA on Saturday and Disneyland on Sunday.

No, Gay days are only on the specified dates that im aware of.

However, Columbus day is Oct 8, so that week and into the Monday may still be quite busy at Disneyland.

Just be aware, weekdays will have the MIckey's Halloween party night on some of those dates, and would have shorter hours during weekdays with no Fireworks show (except for MIckey's Party night guests) or Fantasmic show.

Hojos is a well rated Hotel about an 11 min walk to the turnstiles that go into Disneyland and has the Art Shuttle service.

Unfortunately, Hojos kids suites book up quite far in advance, they are quite popular, and that time period has a very good Entertainment book rate discount offered at rooms starting at $59 a night. They are not showing those dates as being available anymore, but its possible they may add more dates in Oct. again

If you are wanting to stay at Hojos, i would book something now with a cancelable reservation.

I am confused about when you are going to LA. Is it between when you are going to San Diego and Anaheim?

We are planning on San Diego on the 5th for a few days, then LA area including Anaheim midweek to Sat. We do not have an exact agenda. Is there any benefit to staying on Disney property? Disney is not the major draw for this trip, visiting family in San Diego is. To get cheaper and direct flights we have to fly into LAX, not SAN. We thought we might do Disney, SAnta Monica Pier, Hollywood... things the kids would recongnize and enjoy We just want to do a quick visit (maybe 3 days) and hate to pass it over, since we are coming all the way from KY.

There are some perk to staying on Disneyland property, but one of them would not be they are closer to Disneyland, as many of the small well rated Motels are actually the closest to the the Turnstiles that go into Disneyland.

With the exception of the Grand Californian which is located next to California Adventure Park and has its own private Entrance to that Park, but even then depending on where you are staying since its a large Hotel, you may still have the same walk as the places across the street from the Disneyland Main Entrance.

The Disneyland Hotel is about a 7 min walk, and the Paradise Pier Hotel is the fartthest, its about a 14 min walk and no shuttle service at all.

However, they are all nice Hotels and do have some perks such as with your room key you can use every Magic Morning that is offered during your stay (with your own Disneyland ticket). Magic Mornings are offered on Tues, Thurs, Sat, Sun.

You also can use the private entrance to California Adventure Park at the Grand Californian. They also allow the Disneyland Hotels Guests to go through the Private Entrance 1 full hour before regular opening time to the Fastpass area for the World of Color show to pick up a Fastpass for the show.

Thanks for the info. One more question (for now). I am confused about the So cal resident discount. We will be going to DL with our Aunt. She lives in Irine (zip92604). Can she purchase tickets for the whole family at a discount? Party will be her plus 2 adults and 2 kids. (different last name for us) If so, where should she get them? Also she is a retired Cal teacher with full pension...does that get us any discounts if we cannot use the SoCal? I'll have to ask her about Costco.

Please note we are not trying to cheat the system. She is legitimately going with us to spend time with her Grand Neices, but does not how the discounts work. She has lived in Cal most of her life and taught public school Kindergarten for many(40ish) years . We would even consider staying with her if she had a bigger house.

Please advise if she can get whole families tickets or just hers.

Thanks

You know its kind of a gray area, in that the Socal Disneyland ticket say they are to be used by Socal Residents only.

However, we have heard a few Socal residents say they have purchased the actual tickets for thier relatives and brought them to Disneyland with them, and had no problems with entry, and when they have contacted Disneyland to ask about this, have been told it was not against the rules if they used the tickets for others of their party.

They would have to get the actual tickets sent to thier address, (vouchers are deffinately subject to showing ID) by going on the Disneyland.com website and looking at the Socal discount page by typing in thier zipcode on the ticket page.

They also usually offer the Socal Disneyland tickets in some grocery stores, which is also a voucher you would have to exchange for tickets i believe, so any vouchers would have to be taken to the Disneyland Maingate Ticket window by your Aunt to get them exchanged for actual tickets.

Disneyland Tickets available on Costco, are for Socal residents only use as well, and those are vouchers you would have to exchange for tickets as far as im aware.

However, on the other side of things, Disneyland can ask for Socal ID for all of the adult ticket holders when you try to use the Socal Tickets so there is allways a risk of being denied entry, and many people dont want to take that risk.

My understanding is there is also California Teachers discount tickets offered, i dont know if there would be any problems using those tickets if the person who purchased them was with you.

Here is more info on that from the Mousesavers website which lists current discount on attraction tickets for you (they do not sell tickets)
