Custer City, Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial, etc.

I want to map out a trip to include the following attractions;

Arrive Denver Airport

Custer City, Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial, Jewel Cave, Devils Tower.

This will take place in June, no time constraints, 4, 60ish adults.

We are then going on to Yellowstone NP, Grand Tetons and Jackson Hole.

Home from Jackson Hole.

I had a similar post earlier but need help with the sequence in which do do it all!

Many thanks

What did you have questions about that weren't covered?

Have done that trip multiple times but always flew in and out of Denver to avoid one way car rental fees. Please check those because they can be very expensive.

Day 1- fly into Denver- stay in Loveland, Ft. Collins or Cheyenne- depending on time of arrival- if late stay in Denver area.

Day 2- drive to Black Hills- do Mt. Rushmore in afternoon.

Day 3- Crazy Horse, Jewel Cave, Mt. Rushmore for night ceremony.

Day 4- Spend day in Custer State Park- drive Iron Mt. Rd, Needles Hwy, Sylvan Lake, wildlife loop- eat lunch at State Game Lodge for delicious bison stew and homemade pies.

Day 5- drive to Devils Tower and then on to Cody- take in night rodeo.

Day 6- you can either do the Buffalo Bill museums in Cody and stay in Cody or drive on to Yellowstone NP.

Yellowstone NP

Grand Tetons NP

Jackson Hole.

On this trip plan I have included the areas you wanted to see in the Black Hills of SD.

Hope this helps and if you have other questions please let us know.

Thanks! I just saw this after I placed another thread.

Is is possible to drive straight through to Mt. Rushmore from Denver? It"s ok if we get there at night, and there are 4 drivers. I guess the point is we want to get to Yellowstone on day 4. Is this really pushing it? We figured we have another week to relax once we reach Yellowstone.

If your flight is early enough yes you can drive from Denver to Mt. Rushmore. We have landed at 10:30 am and gotten our car and headed to Cheyenne for lunch and then on to Mt. Rushmore. We got there about 7 :30 pm. Some of the areas of eastern Wyoming are open range areas so you can have cattle and wildlife on the roads so you do not want to be driving at night.

So this is what you want to do-

Day 1 fly to Denver and drive to Black Hills

Day 2-3 tour Mt. Rushmore and Custer SP and Crazy Horse

Day 4 drive all the way from Mt. Rushmore to Yellowstone NP. Where are you staying in Yellowstone the first night? From Mt. Rushmore to for example Lake Yellowstone hotel on the east side is 491 miles and should take you with stops between 9-10 hours. From Mt. Rushmore to for example Old Faithful inn is 528 miles and should take you with stops between 10-12 hours depending on traffic in the park.

And to add if you have the time on day 4 stay in Cody unless you already have reservations in the park.

Your day 1 and day 4 will be long days of driving, etc.

Checking in for comments or suggestions on what we have come up with based on your recommendations.

Day 1

arrive Denver at 10:30am, pick up car and head to Cheyenne (or other suggestion) for lunch. Continue on to Hill City and spend the night at the K Bar S Lodge

Day 2

Custer SP Wildlife loop and Wind Cave on to Iron Mt. Rd.en route to Mt. Rushmore. Possibly stop off at Crazy Horse Memorial and Rushmore Lighting. Sounds like a lot for one day!

Day 3

Head to Cody through Spearfish Canyon with possible stop at Devils Tower.

Spend the night in Cody and see the Rodeo Show.

Day 4

Head toward Jackson Hole where we are hoping to rent a condo in Teton Village for a week. We will use this as our base to see GTNP and YNP. Possibly stop on the way in Yellowstone.

Days 4-11 Grand Tetons/Jackson Hole, Yellowstone ( not planned yet...welcome suggestions)!

Day 11

Fly out from Jackson Hole

Thanks for your input, it been very helpful. I welcome all suggestions!

Teton Village is a poor place to use as a base to see Yellowstone. Two hour drive to the Grand Loop/West Thumb. ~3hrs to Old Faithful, ~4hrs Canyon, ~5hrs to Mammoth or Roosevelt without any delays or sighseeing.

Better to split your lodging and stay in Yellowstone or at West Yellowstone. If you are set on staying in one location consider Grant Village in Yellowstone. Not ideal for either but doable.

Teton Village is a nice place but will add lots of time even to get to the Grand Tetons. Only direct way is thru gravel and very narrow Moose Wilson Rd. It takes a long time to drive that route or go back thru Jackson Hole to reach the Tetons. Better to stay in Jackson Hole imo.

It is for sure no place to stay for Yellowstone. Stay in the park or if you want a kitchen then West Yellowstone has lots of cabins and condos.

You cant use Teton as a base for Yellowstone. You need to split the travel.

Jackson to Southern part of yellowstone (old faithful) is well over 2 hrs one way.

If you do south dakota you should first do Yellowstone because of driving and logistics..its more time saving to do yellowstone first.

day 4 drive into yellowstone from Cody. explore the northn lop of the park

day 5 north loop of park (stay Tower, cooke city, Mamouth, Gardiner,W yellowstone, canyon)

day 6 south loop of park (stay in west yellowstone, Canyon, old faithful area, lake yellowstone area)

day 7 south loop of park

day 8 Yellowstone AM/Grand teton PM

day 9 Grand Teton

day 10 Grand Teton

day 11 drive back to denver/fly out of Jackson
