Route from Cody to Deadwood

Hi Guys

In June we will be driving from Cody to Deadwood SD. I would appreciate some input on the drive across the state. Is the better drive to take Hwy 14 from Greybull and connect I-90 at Ranchester going through Bighorn or head south to Worland and tak Hwy 16 and connect to I-90 at Buffalo. There does not seen to be much difference in distance, but I would like to know what drive would be more scenic and interesting. Also if anyone can tell me if one of these routes is more challenging than the other. Any comments are appreciated.

Thanks

Hello. You didn't say when in June you will be driving. That makes a difference. On both routes you will be driving over high mountain passes. A lot of snow falls on the Big Horn Mountains. In early June you will still have lots of snow along the highway, but the highways will be open. I would recommend you drive Highway 14 east from Greybull. Highway 14 is a better constructed road. You will drive through Shell Canyon and up Granite Pass. Granite Pass is a steep pull out of Shell Canyon. Both routes, either Shell Canyon east of Greybull or Ten Sleep Canyon east of Worland are scenic. Highway 16 east of Worland through Ten Sleep Canyon is more challenging. But for overall ease of travel, scenery, travel time, I would drive Highway 14. I have driven both routes too. Plus on Highway 14 you get to drive through Sheridan. Pull over and stop in historic downtown Sheridan. Have a good trip.

Hey I'm also glad to get this info. We were wondering which way would be best when we are leaving Cody heading back to the Denver area via I25! Thanks.
