America RoadTrip Chicago-Lake Michigan Loop June 2014 2weeks

HI-HAVE HAD A REPLY FROM ZED BUT WAS ADVISED TO POST ON HERE FOR MORE LOCAL INFO

We are thinking of doing a road trip round lake Michigan in 2 weeks rather than a 10 days trip to just Chicago

would it be feasible to stay in Chicago for 3-4 nights then do the tour around the lake and back to Chicago in 2 weeks in total

what is the weather typically like in June

is the great lakes region a lovely place to visit

what are the main towns we would need accommodation for in each of the points of interest on rough itinery?

Are any towns unsafe-which should we avoid -or definatley stay

been advised to stay in river north/ mag mile area of chicago

Thanks very much x

Lynne

You're getting great info from the Chicago and Michigan crews. If you want to stop for more than one night in Michigan in one place or more, such as Mackinaw Island, you can easily do Marinette to Chicago in two days, if necessary. Very safe for the most part, except for certain parts of Milwaukee, but if you take the interstate straight through, you'll be fine.

If either of you are interested in submarines, you should stay in Manitowoc and visit the museum there. I think you can skip Door County, though, as you will be seeing a lot of the same scenery the whole trip, and you would need at least 2 days there.

Other options along the Wisconsin coastline would be Algoma or Kewaunee, Kohler (if you want an upscale place to stay), and Cedarburg near Milwaukee if you need to shop for gifts for the folks back home. You should be able to find cheaper lodging if you look for it now.

Another option since you will be with us so long is to book your rooms with Choice Hotels. If you become a member, they give you a discount or a free room after a certain number of nights. We have stayed at several around the Lake Michigan loop, and saved lots of money that way.

Good luck with the planning, and come back and ask us anything else as you dig deeper!

When you're driving south from Marinette, stop in Peshtigo at the Fire Museum. It's a good contrast to any information you have about the Great Chicago Fire. The Pestigo Fire occurred on the same date and killed 5 times as many people and was a huge tragedy. It's been many years since I visited the museum, but it's a worth a stop. http://peshtigofiremuseum.org and here http://www.peshtigofire.info

Also, if you want to dip inland a bit and are interested in Harry Houdini, there is another great museum in Appleton, Wisconsin. http://www.myhistorymuseum.org Appleton is on the Fox River that flows north from Lake Winnebago to Green Bay and is the home of Lawrence University, one of many American liberal arts colleges that are sprinkled throughout the midwest. They have nice art gallery.

And I agree with Kimbob about Door County.

Also, you can, in a pinch, make it to Chicago in a long day, from Marinette. :)

June weather can vary from cool 60 s to 80s and warm especially later in the month. You will probably get rain one or 2 days . So. Alight jacket and dressing in layers will work.

The great Lakes are a hidden gem that you will love.

You have agreat itinerary. You might also look into a few other stops that we enjoy. Grand Rapids , MI has a wonderful garden the Frederick Meijer garden and sculptures for 3 hours visit. If any interst in US politics they also have a museum of former president Gerald Ford.

Ludington Michigan area also very nice . Watch the sunset and walk for miles on the beach at Ludington state park with views of Big Sable lighthouse. You can take a dune buggy ride nearby with MacDunes.

Lots of good items on your plan. Stop by the Cherry Republic store while near Sleeping Bear- it is a lot of fun. Lots of great beaches all along the Michigan shore. I also vote for skipping Door County, spend your time seeing other sites in Wisconsin. Some good ones were already listed, lots to see in Green Bay if you are interested in football- yes the American kind.

Have a great trip

There are a lot of great attractions in Wisconsin such as the ones mentioned in the previous posts- Peshtigo Fire Museum, Appleton, Green Bay etc.

What would you like to do on your trip? There are a lot of wineries, or scenic views, historical sites, or public gardens to view in Wisconsin. Throw out some ideas on what interests you or who you are traveling with and the many friendly people on this site will give you a bunch of ideas.
