Lake Vacation

We live in MD and were looking for a nice quiet lake where we can rent a cabin and maybe do some moderate hiking and some fishing (i.e. rent a canoe or John boat). some place quiet and serene.

thanks for any suggestions.

Coming from Baltimore on Interstate 70 to 68, each of these parks would take between 3 and 5 hours. Here are a few for you to check out and get started:

Tygart Lake State Park near Grafton: http://www.tygartlake.com/

Stonewall Jackson Resort near Weston: http://www.stonewallresort.com/

Alpine Lake Resort near Terra Alta: http://www.alpinelake.com/

Each is unique and more serene than Deep Creek Lake in Maryland (though we love Deep Creek Lake because of all of the activities that surround it). Stonewall is more upscale with an Arnold Palmer Golf Course and a couple of nice restaurants in the lodge. Alpine is an old ski resort surrounded by a golf course and retirement homes. Very pretty and very affordable. Tygart Lake has great fishing and is really pretty.

In case you are interested in checking out Deep Creek Lake, here is a website: http://www.deepcreeklake.com/ The Wisp ski resort is the biggest attraction at Deep Creek, but it is a tourist destination year round with dining, shopping, nightlife, mini golf, etc. Great place, but not serene: http://www.wispresort.com/ It would be about a 2 1/2 to 3 hour drive from Baltimore to Deep Creek Lake, Maryland (near Oakland Maryland, past Cumberland).

We like the Summersville Lake area. You aren't far from white water rafting if you choose, great hiking, the New River Gorge Bridge area, Droop Mountain Battlefield.

A lot of people like http://www.aceraft.com/

You would also be relatively close to Beckley if you wanted to tour a coal mine and see the miner's homes and an old school.

I agree with Stonewall Jackson Resort. Also look at Cheat River..they have lodges and cabins and are kind of close to MD. http://www.cheatriverlodge.com/front.html

Bluestone St. Park is very nice, lots to do there, but might be a bit out of the way for you...but worth it if you choose it. Droop Mountain Battlefield is a good 1.5 hours from Summersville Lake and usually isn't included in things to do in that area. Nice, interesting place and all...but I wouldn't put the two together.
