Best place in fall if I like mountains & hiking?

I have always wanted to visit West Virginia for fall foliage but don't know where to go.

If I like mountains, hiking, wildlife and nature, where should I go? I have small kids who like all of that, too. And my wife does like shopping in small towns, if that helps any.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

The most-scenic and most popular area of the state is Canaan Valley. The leaves change early there, so you'll be looking at late September for peak viewing. SO MUCH to do in the area with two resorts, state parks, caverns, hiking, dining, fishing, skiing. There are several threads here with great info on Canaan Valley. Start with checking these out:

Elkins in Randolph County is a great home base in the fall. All the amenities of a small town-dining, lodging, shopping and great scenic attractions and hiking are just a short drive away.

Definitely Canaan Valley/Blackwater Falls area. Lindy Point at BW Falls is beautiful in fall, as is Pendleton Point. Lindy might be a mile hike, Pendleton just a short walk. The chairlift at Canaan has good views and you can ride or hike back down. Dolly Soda which is a short drive is also a fabulous place to hike. Bear Rocks has a great view.

You might want to consider coming the third Saturday in October to Fayetteville, WV. That's Bridge Day! Basically, a bunch (hundreds) of parachuters jump off the New River Gorge Bridge all day. People can go out on the bridge and watch. There are also vendors set up along the road, arts and crafts and food. There is lots of great hiking trails in that area as well. The town of Fayetteville has lots of neat, quaint, quirky shops.http://www.officialbridgeday.com/

Or...head to Greenbrier and Pocohontas County. Maybe stay at Snowshoe Resort. Great place to hike. Then visit Lewisburg. Again...lots of wonderful shops all over town.http://www.downtownlewisburg.com/
