Decisions, Decisions--itinerary suggestions??

I am planning a 4 day trip to WV from the DC area in late June. We've been to Harper's Ferry before, and loved it. Trying to plan an itinerary that won't spend most of the time in the car driving all over the place. I've done some reading and am interested in the New River area, Helvetia, possibly the Cheat River area, and of course, Harper's Ferry. It will be myself and two daughters ages 11 & 12. We are interested in swimming, some moderate hiking, some shopping, maybe the jetboat ride on the New River, possibly some river rafting (not sure if the kids can go), and just being outside.

So, any suggestions on places worth seeing, things to do, things that are over-rated? I am worried that my younger daughter (not real athletic) wouldn't enjoy the river rafting, and most places say ages 12 and up.

When you research the rafting companies, check and see what other activities they offer. Some have biking and horseback riding.

Short drive down Rt 19 would be the Beckley Exibition Coal Mine. A bit dated but still some educational value for your girls.

Helvetia is south of Elkins and out in the woods. Never been there but way I understand it, it's like a small swiss village. Type it into your search. Saw a Helvetia Bed and breakfast. Looks like mid June they are having music festival.

On another thread you asked about lodging. Your best bet would be in the Fayettville/Oak Hill area. More variety for restaurants than around Hawks Nest Lodge.

Helvetia is supposed to be a lovely little Swiss town. Nice resturants. They have a music festival this year during Father's Day

weekend. From there you can get on 219 and go to Snowshoe Ski Resort for a day or so. Beautiful area, hiking, swimming, lots of roadside produce to buy from. Antique stores. Head on to Lewisburg, another great town to shop in. Lots of neat stores.

From there you can head in to Beckley and Oak Hill and Fayetteville for rafting or jet boats.

There are lots of cabins in the Oak Hill and Fayetteville area that might work for you.

www.wvcabins.com is very convenient.

You can also just "google" "cabins in Fayette County, WV"

So much to do.. 4 days is barely enough.

Check out http://www.wvparks.com/

Blackwater Falls-central-has easy hikes, paddleboats on the lake and a beautiful waterfall. Travel through Thomas and Davis to see little shops and places to eat. On up to Canaan Valley Resort and you can see deer, and go swimming in their pool.

Cass Railroad. Take the Shay engine to the top of the mountain.

Watoga State Park-south. They have an 11 acre lake and hiking.

We enjoyed lunch at the Cathedral Cafe in Fayetteville and Dirty Ernie's Rib Pit http://www.dirtyernies.com/ is supposed to be really good.

If you end up close by: Do not miss the Mystery Hole. www.mysteryhole.com/pages/415160/index.htm. Like it says - "the Law of Gravity seems to have gone berserk ". Trust me, you will walk out of there mystified. It is 2 minutes from Hawk's Nest State Park and 5 minutes from the Cathedral Falls in Gauley Bridge. It is a quirky little place but well... seeing is believing.

Site that may help you: New River Gorge National River http://www.nps.gov/neri/home.htm

Do not know anyone who goes to Helvetia. If you go, please give us feedback on it.

Two great places for future trips:

We have a cabin in Canaan Valley, WV so I can attest to the fact that tons of people from the DC area are building second homes in the Valley. That tells me it is not too rough a drive from DC. It takes about 3 hours.

Check out the Valley at http://www.canaanvalley.org/

Another place to put on your list of places close to DC is Cacapon State Park and http://www.cacaponresort.com/ and the town of Berkeley Springs http://www.berkeleysprings.com/. It is about 2 hours from DC.
