West Virginia in April

Traveling to WV in April on road trip to DC. We are looking for places to camp, fish, and kayak. Not really white water kayaking, just a way to get out and enjoy the outdoors. Any suggestions? We have our own kayaking and camping gear.

Love your state and it has been a good while since we were there! I think our next stop is Glacier NP.

The quickest route from Mt. to DC will not take you through WV at all, so I hope you decide to take the path a little less traveled!

Anyway, you could travel Rt. 50 across WV to DC. You might check out North Bend State Park, which is near Harrisville, WV. Not one of our mountain parks, but a lot of people really like camping there. They also have a lake for boating if lake fishing and kayaking is ok for you. And they have the rail trail just outside the park....bring or rent bikes and you have access to the trail in either direction...including tunnels. I think there are probably other trails in the park, but I haven't done any of them except the rail trail...and we've done all 72 miles of that!

Also, I love the Canaan Valley area with Blackwater Falls as well.

The Dolly Sods area has really pretty hiking and the view from Lindy Point at BW Falls is beautiful. I don't know about kayaking, but the BW river has fishing.

This trail has 20 tunnels if you travel the full 72 miles!!

We are also traveling WV in April. At this time I believe we will be spending Friday evening near Floyd, VA and will head to WV on Saturday. Thought we would spend Sat and Sun night in Lewisburg (seeing southern WV over the weekend) and then head north to arrive in Winchester, VA on Tuesday night.

Okay, in two days (probably not enough time) what is the best of the best for 2 seniors to see? We will be driving - no kayaking anymore - so any advise for scenic routes, lodging and where to eat is appreciated.

Also, about how long does it take to get from Lewisburg to Winchester? Will we have time in two days to do much meandering about? We have been to western WV but this is the first time to see this area and I am getting excited as I learn more about what is available.

Thanks, LadyFeathers

LadyFeathers, you will have plenty of time to see some great parts of Southern West Virginia. Some ideas.....Head in on I-77, getting off at the Athens exit and head to Pipestem St. Park. taking a look around, maybe lunch there and climb to the top of the Firetower...breathtaking view up there! When you come out of the park, make a left (east?north??) on Rt. 20 toward the town of Hinton, go to Sandstone Falls. Oh, you will pass by Kirks Resturant on the river...great place to stop for food, eat on the patio! After Sandstone, head to I-64 to Beckley. Lots of hotels and resturants to choose from there. You will also pass by Grandview National Park, lots of hiking and a couple of great overlooks there. Also Little Beaver St. Park is very close, A small lake to walk around. Beautiful. You could do both parks easily. From Beckley, head north on I-77 and get on Rt. 19 and go to the New RIver Gorge Bridge. A fabulous overlook on the north side of the bridge! You could also have dinner at one of the great resturants in Fayetteville....Pies and Pints, (pizza and beer)...or Smokeys on the Gorge.

From Beckley, you would head back to Lewisburg...50 miles...spending 3 or 4 hours there shopping and maybe having a meal there. (Food and Friends, or Stellas, or Bella Casa, to name a few) Check out The Greenbrier too...you can walk all over the place. These are just some ideas, and of course you could do them in a different order. I would spend Sat. night in Beckley , Sunday in Lewisburg. From Lewisburg to Winchester is about 3 and one-half hours. Have fun!! Enjoy!!

Welcoming you in advance to Wild and Wonderful West Virginia! There's so much to do here, it could take pages. For some easy kayaking my husband and I took a trip down "The Trough" on the South Branch of the Potomac River. We went to the Trough General Store to be shuttled up stream for a small fee. http://www.wvcanoerentals.com/ You can also rent canoes & kayaks, but we have our own. The trip was great....some small white water, eagles, all sorts of wild life. It's a popular kayaking run in the summer. You should see lots of eagles in the spring, I am told. You can also go thru The Trough on the Potomac Eagle train. But kayaking is much more fun!

If you want some WILD white water, catch a trip down the New River Gorge. Awesome white water!!

And if you have the time, don't miss The Wildernest Inn.....where wild bears roam the property!! Don't worry......so far, no casualties. GREAT B&B, with wonderful food and very accommodating hosts, Kathy & Stewart. http://www.wildernestinn.com/

There's some good camping at Big Bend. www.us-parks.com/west-virginia-camping.html There are some great sites close to the river.

That's just the tip of the iceberg.. Hope you have a great trip!
